Senate Confirms Former Arkansas Senator Pryor and Magazine Executive

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday night, the United States Senate unanimously confirmed the nominations of David Pryor and Chris Boskin to terms on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) Board of Directors. Pryor is a former United States Senator and Governor from Arkansas, and Boskin is a former magazine executive and six-year veteran of the Board of public television station KQED in San Francisco.

Pryor and Boskin were nominated by President Bush in June to serve on CPB's nine-member Board. On September 21, the Senate Commerce Committee held a confirmation hearing on the two nominees; and on September 27 the Committee unanimously reported the nominations to the full Senate.

"We are excited to have both Senator Pryor and Ms. Boskin on our Board, as their extraordinary breadth of perspectives, experiences and expertise have informed them about the vital role public broadcasting plays as a 'connector to community'," said CPB president and CEO Patricia Harrison. "I have no doubt that their contributions to our Board will help public broadcasting fulfill its mission and promise, and we look forward to working with them on behalf of all public broadcasting stakeholders."

"On behalf of their board colleagues, I congratulate Senator Pryor and Chris Boskin and thank them for their service to the American people," said CPB Board Chair Cheryl Halpern. "I look forward to having the benefit of their experiences and insight on the Board as we address the challenging work ahead."

David Pryor served three terms in the U.S. Senate, representing Arkansas from 1979 until his retirement in 1997. He also served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1966 to 1973, and as Governor of Arkansas from 1975 to 1979. During his time in the Senate, Pryor served as Chairman of the Committee on Aging and as Secretary of the Democratic Conference. In 2000, Pryor became Director of the Institute of Politics at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Most recently, he has served as Dean of the Clinton School of Public Service in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Chris Boskin is a highly respected veteran of magazine publishing, with a career that has included publishing and marketing positions with Worth Media, the New Yorker Magazine, Hearst Corporation and East West Network. She has served on the Board of Directors of KQED-TV, San Francisco's public television station for six years. Her other board and advisory affiliations include Board of Directors, Yoga Journal; Board of Directors, College Track; Board of Directors, Educate Girls Foundation; Member, Leadership Council, Laura Bush Foundation for America's Libraries; and Advisory Board, School of Journalism University of California, Berkeley.

Pryor was confirmed to a term of the Board of Directors that will expire on January 31, 2008. Boskin was confirmed to a term that will expire in 2012.

The American Liver Foundation Applauds Steven Tyler for His Frank Discussion About Hepatitis C

The American Liver Foundation Applauds Steven Tyler for His Frank Discussion About Hepatitis C

Serious Blood Disease Affects Almost Four Million Americans

NEW YORK, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Liver Foundation (ALF), a national nonprofit organization that provides education, advocacy and research on behalf of the 30 million Americans affected by liver disease, today thanked Steven Tyler, lead singer of Aerosmith, for his recent announcement that he has been battling hepatitis C, a dangerous liver disease that claims 8,000 - 10,000 lives a year in the United States.

"Mr. Tyler has done something very commendable," said Fred Thompson, president and CEO of the American Liver Foundation. "By speaking out about his personal struggle with hepatitis C, he helps draw attention to a terrible disease that affects almost 4 million Americans. We need more brave people to speak out about this terrible disease that is far too often ignored. It is estimated that, for the years 2010-2019, the direct and indirect costs of hepatitis C to the U.S. health care system will be $85 billion. More proof of how liver disease affects all Americans."

Hepatitis C is the most common blood-borne infection in the United States. "There are 36,000 new cases of hepatitis C in the U.S. each year," said Thompson. "But many of those infected have no idea they are sick because the disease doesn't have any specific symptoms. If Mr. Tyler's action can motivate more people to get the simple blood test necessary to screen for the disease, he will have improved the lives of thousands."

Facts about hepatitis C
-- Hepatitis C is the most common chronic blood borne infection in the
United States.
-- The World Health Organization has estimated that roughly 3% of the
world population has been infected with the hepatitis C virus and that
there are more than 170 million chronic carriers who are at risk of
developing liver cirrhosis and/or liver cancer.
-- Hepatitis C is four time more infectious than the AIDS virus.
-- Hepatitis C turns into a chronic disease for over 70 percent of those
infected.
-- If not treated, hepatitis C can cause cirrhosis (scarring) of the
liver, liver cancer, liver failure and death.
-- Chronic hepatitis C is the leading indication for adult liver
transplantation in the U.S.

The Legendary Sam Moore Wins the Mobo for Lifetime Achievement!

The Legendary Sam Moore Wins the Mobo for Lifetime Achievement!

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Sam was the first ever artist to be honored at the Mobo Awards (Music Of Black Origin) in London, England with a Lifetime Achievement Award!

"The highlight of the evening's BBC televised show came at the end when soul legend Sam Moore brought the house down with a blistering rendition of 'Soul Man.'" -- Daily Mirror

Sam was presented the award at the Royal Albert Hall ceremony by close friend and legendary performer in his own right Steve Winwood, who's also featured on Moore's new album Overnight Sensational, out now worldwide.

Sam brought the house down with a dazzling performance of "I Can't Stand The Rain" with lucky UK soul singer Keisha White before closing the show with his Grammy Award-winning hit "Soul Man" to a rapturous applause and standing ovation.

For years Sam Moore was best known for his work with the historic soul duo Sam & Dave. The rapid-fire style, built on the call and response of gospel, was fashioned and pioneered by Sam, whose unmistakable if not incredible voice became his trademark. Songs like "Hold On I'm Coming," "I Thank You," "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby," "Soul Sister," "Brown Sugar," "Wrap It Up" and his monster hit "Soul Man" catapulted him up both the Pop and R & B Charts selling more than 10 million records worldwide.

The album Sam Moore Overnight Sensational has recently been released. Incomparably produced by Randy Jackson, the famous bass player/record executive/talent judge, the album features an amazing array of 22 of Sam's friends and fans like Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Sting, Vince Gill, Travis Tritt, Paul Rodgers, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Billy Gibbons, and Wynonna, who celebrate Sam by adding a touch here and there on material by writers ranging from Diane Warren and Garth Brooks to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun.

C4CC Congratulates Californians on Cable Competition Law; Launches Drive to Remind U.S. Senate that All Consumers Want Cable Choice

C4CC Congratulates Californians on Cable Competition Law; Launches Drive to Remind U.S. Senate that All Consumers Want Cable Choice

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Consumers for Cable Choice (C4CC) today thanked Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for putting California consumer needs on the front burner and signing into law a bill that encourages competition in the cable television industry.

The national advocacy group also launched a pledge drive to prompt the U.S. Senate to take the same kind of consumer-friendly action with its own pot of simmering federal cable legislation.

"This is great news for California consumers," said Jim Conran, C4CC executive director, predicting cost savings will begin as soon as competitive providers start signaling interest in the West Coast market.

California is the 8th state in the union to embrace the benefits of competition by updating cable laws to eliminate barriers to competition. Under the new law, companies wanting to enter the cable television market can seek one, statewide authorization to serve throughout the state rather than having to negotiate separate agreements with each city and town.

"While I'm excited at the consumer possibilities this law offers my fellow Californians, our job isn't finished," Conran said. "The U.S. Senate has back-burnered legislation that could extend consumer benefits to the rest of America. We need our senators to make cable savings a national priority."

Conran said any doubts about the positive consumer effects of competition in the marketplace should be put to rest once competition takes root in California.

"Consumers here are poised to save $852 million a year thanks to competitive market pressure," he said. "Every American deserves this same opportunity."

Conran urged all American consumers -- even those in states where the welcome mat is already out to competition -- to visit http://www.consumers4choice.org/, sign the C4CC pledge to fight for cable choice and tell the Senate they want competitive choice.

"Consumers already understand that when cable companies compete, customers win," Conran said. "Our senators need to be reminded."

About Consumers for Cable Choice, Inc.

C4CC is a national alliance of consumer advocacy groups, private citizens -- including hundreds of Californians -- who are committed to promoting maximum choice for consumers in cable, video and broadband services. Conran has been advocating for policies that benefit residential and small business consumers for more than 20 years.

Verizon Statement on Cable-Franchising Bill: California Consumers Win as Gov. Schwarzenegger Signs Video Franchise Reform Legislation

Verizon Statement on Cable-Franchising Bill: California Consumers Win as Gov. Schwarzenegger Signs Video Franchise Reform Legislation

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today signed into law a statewide cable-franchising bill that received overwhelming bipartisan support in the state Legislature. The law, authored by Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez and Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committee Chairman Lloyd Levine, streamlines the process for companies to obtain video franchises and opens the cable TV market to new competitors.

Verizon, connecting the nation's largest fiber-optic network directly to customers' homes, is building its all-fiber-optic network in many of the wireline telephone areas it serves in California. The 100-percent fiber-optic network is the technological platform from which customers receive Verizon's crystal-clear FiOS TV, ultra-fast FiOS Internet Service and reliable FiOS phone service.

The following statement should be attributed to Verizon West Region President Tim McCallion:

"Gov. Schwarzenegger's signing of the Digital Infrastructure and Cable Competition Act is a huge victory for California's consumers. Under this law, California sets a new standard for accelerating cable-TV competition, and customers can expect new choices, greater value and improved service in terms of video providers.

"This landmark legislation unlocks the vast potential of Verizon's all-fiber network and enables us to more rapidly offer a new alternative to cable -- FiOS TV -- in dozens of communities where we have already built our 100-percent fiber-optic network. The new law also provides the certainty for Verizon to commit hundreds of millions of dollars in additional investment to accelerate fiber deployment in California, creating hundreds of new jobs and stimulating our state's economy.

"Customer acceptance of Verizon's FiOS services continues to grow at a record pace because we have established best-in-class standards for TV picture quality, programming choice, broadband speeds and customer service."

Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ), a Dow 30 company, is a leader in delivering broadband and other wireline and wireless communication innovations to mass market, business, government and wholesale customers. Concert goers were not let down as Axl Rose and his band mates Dizzy Reed, Robin Finck, Richard Fortus, Tommy Stinson, Chris Pitman, Brain and Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal burned through classics such as "Welcome to the Jungle," "Paradise City," "Nightrain," "Mr. Brownstone," "November Rain" and "Sweet Child O' Mine" as well as highlighting soon to be favourites from the forthcoming "Chinese Democracy" album.

Just this week, the Hollywood Reporter's concert review of KROQ's Inland Invasion observed, "when headliner Guns N' Roses took the stage everything old became new again -- and everything new on the bill, just couldn't hold a candle in comparison ... the night belonged to Guns N' Roses!"

Axl Rose commented, "We had an amazing tour in Europe this summer and last week's shows here in the US were great. It's been a long time getting here but we look forward to coming to your town and having a lot of fun."

Sebastian Bach who has been guesting with Guns N' Roses on "My Michelle" will open the entire tour with the Special Guest slot going to a number of great bands starting with Papa Roach for the dates through the 3rd of November. The shows have been planned to cater to a Guns N' Roses rock n' roll party atmosphere with Sebastian hitting the stage every night at 8 pm followed by the Special Guest at 9 pm and Guns N' Roses shortly after 10 pm and lots of great music in between.

Guns N' Roses are also delighted to announce that they have partnered with Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLB.COM) to provide their fans with premium ticketing opportunities and up to the minute information on the tour and the band's other activities via gunsnroses.com which will be launched as of tomorrow.

As for Guns N' Roses forthcoming "Chinese Democracy" album the only comment at this time is that there are 13 Tuesdays left between now and the end of the year.

The film's compelling storyline of three young female singers trying to make it big in the late 1960s chronicles the trio's determination for success leveraging independence, personal style and friendship for a shot in the spotlight. Return of the Coreys Not the RETURN OF THE LOST BOYS: Clearing a Blurred Reality

Return of the Coreys Not the RETURN OF THE LOST BOYS: Clearing a Blurred Reality

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Legendary duo Corey Feldman and Corey Haim begin pre-production on their new, as of yet untitled, television show. Executive producers Feldman and Haim are truly thrilled to be working together again for the first time in over ten years, and greatly look forward to a successful partnership with production company RDF Media, and the A&E Network. The show, a reality based comedy, reunites the long time friends, and also stars Corey's wife of four years, Susie Sprague-Feldman. Unfortunately, there have been several false statements made in various publications and on the internet regarding the show, as well as Feldman and Haim. The Feldman camp wishes to issue the following statements to clear up any potential misconceptions.

* RETURN OF THE LOST BOYS is simply a working title for the project, and
will NOT be the airing title of the show

* There have been references to Feldman's "return to acting." Tracie May
of Fabulous PR, Corey Feldman's publicist, replies "If we are going to
talk "reality," Mr. Feldman has worked consistently as an actor in
Hollywood for 32 years. Anyone with access to the IMDB can see that.
He just received a best actor award for his outstanding work in the
film "The Birthday." His animated Toon Disney show Super Robot Monkey
Team Hyperforce Go! is currently airing its third season. The
statement that he is returning to acting is simply ridiculous."

* Mr. Haim has been referred to as "broke and homeless." The show's plot
involves the typical life at home with the Feldman family that becomes
dramatically altered by a friendly visit turned stay by Haim. For
dramatic effect only, Haim's character on the show will be "broke and
homeless"; Mr. Haim in his real life is in fact not.

* A topic raised in several articles was Feldman and Haim's former
substance abuse issues. In response. Feldman's issues were more than
fifteen years ago when he was a teenager, and he is now focused on
career, family, and his commitment to animal and environmental rights;
he is being recognized with an award for dedication to animal rights in
two weeks by the Wildlife WayStation. Haim is also doing better than
ever, and looks forward to beginning work on this show.

* Feldman quotes "Corey and I have been looking for the right opportunity
to work together again, and now is the time, as Corey looks great and
is doing better than ever."

Pianist Matt Bengtson Does the Circuit

Pianist Matt Bengtson Does the Circuit

A Polish foundation tops the list of concert performances for this busy keyboard artist

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Fresh back in Philadelphia from a spate of September performances in Newtown, PA, the University of Pennsylvania, Baltimore, King of Prussia, and Pottstown, pianist Matthew Bengtson resumes a busy schedule of out-of-town concerts from fall through the Christmas season.

On Sunday, October 1 at 3 p.m., inside An die Musik Concert Hall at Charles and Centre streets in Baltimore, MD, Bengtson will perform with the Tononi Quartet in a performance of Dvorak's "Piano Quintet in A major."

At Cumberland County College at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 15, Bengtson will perform a solo recital featuring the works of Medtner, Faure, Chopin, Debussy, Scriabin, Rachmaninov and Schubert. CCC is located at 3322 College Drive in Vineland, NJ.

And on Friday, November 3, at 4 p.m. inside the Marshall Auditorium of Haverford College, Bengtson will perform alongside tenor Thomas Lloyd and Richard Stone, lute and theorbo, in a mixed-period program consisting of works by d'India, Strozzi, Schubert, Berlioz, Monteverdi and Purcell. Lloyd is the college's director of vocal music, and Stone is the director of the Swarthmore Baroque Ensemble. Bengtson will be performing on a Nanette Streicher copy fortepiano, built by Thomas and Barbara Wolf, and generously loaned by Rutgers University, Camden.

Promoting Polish culture

Back in Philly, the pianist caps his schedule with a recital for The Kosciuszko Foundation's annual Christmas concert on Sunday, December 17, 2006 at 4 p.m.

The organization's Philadelphia Chapter sponsors and hosts a variety of Polish cultural events throughout the year. The Foundation itself is a nonprofit organization named for Revolutionary War hero Thaddeus Kosciuszko and is based in New York City. It was established in 1925 to encourage and promote the study of Polish culture, history, language, and tradition in the United States.

Joined by violinist Blanka Bednarz, Bengtson will perform the music of Polish composer Karol Szymanowski. Szymanowski re-invigorated Polish music education and established a contemporary Polish idiom in his music that inspired a whole generation of Polish composers. Attracted by the wide range of moods in this composer's music, Bengtson has immersed himself in Szymanowski, enough to record on compact disc all twenty-two of Szymanowski's mazurkas.

Bengtson has a growing number of compact discs to his credit, having also recorded the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Bartok and Scriabin. A recent review of Bengtson's Scriabin playing stated, "Only Horowitz and Richter can compare to what Bengtson achieves on this disc" (American Record Guide).

Bengtson has soloed with a number of symphony orchestras in addition to being a regular recitalist and participant in worldwide piano competitions. He teaches at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges and at the University of Pennsylvania, and serves on the piano staff of the Curtis Institute of Music. Despite a demanding schedule, Bengtson finds time for some competitive chess and golf. A FIDE master (FM), he competes internationally with some of the world's finest chess masters and won the Midland Open, a Grand Prix event in England. He has also won several amateur golf tournaments and has a 3 handicap. He is also a co-president of the Penn Go Society.
