250 Volunteers in Vermont Join Over 100,000 Nationwide

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt., April 30, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 250 local Comcast NBCUniversal employees and their families, friends and community partners will "make change happen" today, Saturday, April 30(th), as they volunteer to improve four Vermont sites as part of the 15(th )annual Comcast Cares Day.

Comcast Cares Day, which takes place each April during National Volunteer Month, is Comcast NBCUniversal's companywide celebration of their year-round commitment to service and the nation's largest single-day corporate volunteer effort in the country. Today, Vermont volunteers will roll their sleeves up at sites in Morrisville, Rutland, Shaftsbury and South Burlington.

For example, at the Dodge House in Rutland, which provides transitional housing for veterans, volunteers comprised of participants from the organization will join Comcast employees and their family and friends to paint, clean, and landscape their facility.

"On behalf of The Dodge House, we're very excited to have Comcast donate their efforts and resources on what is sure to be a productive and fun Comcast Cares Day," said Christina Morgan, Executive Director of The Dodge House. Crews will also be landscaping, painting and spring cleaning at Shaftsbury Elementary School in Shaftsbury, the Lamoille Family Center in Morrisville, and the Humane Society of Chittenden County in South Burlington.

For example, at Lincoln-Bassett Community School in New Haven, a record 400 volunteers will contribute to various projects of all shapes and sizes for all ages and abilities to spruce up the school.

For example, at the Dorchester YMCA, approximately 500 volunteers (including City Year Boston corps members) teamed up to build the first mini golf course in the city in the Y's backyard, paint, clean and spruce up the adjacent area in Codman Square.

Brady Suspension Reaffirms Commissioner's Power

The decision of the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals to reinstate the four-game suspension of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady shows how much power has been placed in the hands of NFL National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell. Says Dunn: "Under the collective bargaining agreement signed by the player's union and the NFL, the commissioner has broad discretion, which the ruling notes. The 2nd Circuit also noted that it was required to give the commissioner 'substantial deference' when considering an appeal of one of his rulings. That means that unless the commissioner goes outside his authority and ignores the plain language of the collective bargaining agreement, or unless he is demonstrably unfair, then his rulings will not be overturned by an appellate court. This court decision will have implications in the future when players and team owners reexamine their collective bargaining agreement, which gives the commissioner these broad powers."

MISA launches special website with free content for media to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration

WINDHOEK, Namibia, 27 April 2016 / PRN Africa / -- MISA hereby advises all print, online and broadcasting media editors, as well as specialist media publications, newsletters and journalism initiatives, that a portfolio of over 40 quality articles and audio-visual content on free media, free expression and access to information in sub-Saharan Africa is available to them for print and online publication or broadcasting at no charge. The articles, written by journalists and media experts from West, East and Southern Africa, are being made available by MISA in order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of UNESCO's 1991 Windhoek Declaration on an Independent and Pluralistic African Press. The UN proclaimed the date of adoption of this ground-breaking Declaration, May 3, as World Press Freedom Day (WPFD). The two co-editors of the African Free Press, Jeanette Minnie and Hendrik Bussiek – both experts on media freedom challenges in sub-Saharan Africa – have commissioned articles on a wide range of topics pertinent to the African media environment (see table below). ES and NAAAOM's proposal provides that New Charter set aside 10% of all its activated channel capacity -- no fewer than 50 video programming services -- for the carriage of 100% African American-owned channels. In honor of the band's current Top 5 single that is still climbing, "Snapback," the partnership commences with LIDS and New Era's launch of the Old Dominion hat design contest. From now until June 20, shoppers are encouraged to design a hat for the band and submit their design image via Twitter or Instagram by tagging LIDS and Old Dominion while including the hashtags #OldDominionLids and #contest. A design image can also be uploaded through LIDS' dedicated contest microsite. Old Dominion is supporting the design contest through continuous social promotion to fans and recorded vignettes now playing in participating stores.
