WASHINGTON, Oct. 31, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) is pleased to add Comedian George Lopez and Grammy(®) nominated R&B superstar Trey Songz to their star-studded list of guests attending their 26(th) premier black-tie event on November 12(th), announced TMCF President & CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr.
Lopez and Songz will make a stop in Washington, DC to show their support to TMCF and participate in very special presentations for the evening - as TMCF celebrates the work and legacies of four distinguished honorees.
"We are so excited to have George Lopez and Trey Songz join us at our upcoming Gala," said Taylor. "Their presence and support of TMCF will go a long way to helping us continue supporting HBCU students and helping them fulfill their college dreams."
George Lopez's multi-faceted career encompasses television, film, standup comedy and late-night television. For two seasons, he has hosted Lopez Tonight, a late-night television talk show on TBS. After television's groundbreaking hit sitcom, George Lopez, which ran for six seasons on ABC, Lopez remains a hit with viewers in syndication on both broadcast stations and cable's Nick at Nite. In 2006, Lopez received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Time magazine named him one of the 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America.
Lopez also founded The Lopez Foundation, established to create positive, permanent change for underprivileged children and adults confronting challenges in education and health, as well as increasing community awareness about kidney disease, organ donation, and the military. Each year Mr. Lopez hosts the Annual George Lopez Celebrity Golf Classic, which has raised over 2 million dollars to fund The Children's Summer & Fall Transplant Camps, San Fernando Elementary School Toy Drive, and Military programs.
Moviegoers will next see him in the Lionsgate inspirational drama, Spare Parts. Produced by Lopez, the film is based on a true story about four undocumented Mexican-American teenagers from Phoenix who team up to build an underwater robot that wins the national robotics competition.
Trey Songz is an award-winning singer-songwriter, producer and actor. This Grammy® -nominated R&B superstar released his sixth studio album TRIGGA this summer, debuting at #1 on the Billboard top 200 charts, his second album in a row to do so (after his fifth album, "CHAPTER V"). Behind such hits as "Na Na" and "What's Best for You", he has proven that he isn't slowing down anytime soon and has solidified his place as a permanent fixture in the entertainment industry. Off the heels of this success, Songz will be hitting the road on a nationwide tour with fellow performer, Chris Brown.
Leveraging such success to help others, Songz is equally as passionate about his "Angels With Heart Foundation," which he founded in 2010 as a call to arms engaging his fan club - Trey's Angels. It has since turned into a worldwide movement, with Songz encouraging members to give back and have a positive impact in their neighborhood through community service, supporting local charities and random acts of kindness
"We have a great program lined up with entertainment icon LL COOL J serving as Host and, Grammy(®) award-winning Regina Belle as the Entertainer for the evening," Taylor said. "We are looking forward to sharing the evening with Trey and George as we honor the work and legacies of Sheila C. Johnson (CEO of Salamander Hotels & Resorts and BET Co-Founder); Dr. William R. Harvey (President of Hampton University); Admiral Michelle Howard (Vice Chief of Naval Operations, U.S. Navy); and, Joshua I. Smith (Chairman and Managing Partner, Coaching Group, LLC)."
The Gala - themed "Developing Minds... Delivering Dreams" - celebrates the achievements of the country's foremost visionaries who have used their status to positively impact the lives of students attending publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Proceeds from the Gala will enable TMCF to continue its work as a critical link between students getting the most from their education and the opportunity to become part of a new generation of global leaders.
