LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "IN-SCHRIFT 2," an orchestral work that explores the boundaries of musical space, has earned German composer Wolfgang Rihm the 2015 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition.

The 15-minute piece incorporates spatial effects and other inventive techniques to evoke a wide range of sound and emotion, said award director Marc Satterwhite.

The Berlin Philharmonic commissioned the work last year to celebrate the 50(th) anniversary of the opening of Philharmonie, the city's iconic concert hall. At the October 2013 premiere, Rihm stationed clarinetists and percussionists at different spots around the auditorium to give the audience a sense of hearing music both near and far away.

"The work evokes dark colors and uses mostly low instruments - no flutes, violins or violas, for example," Satterwhite said. "It begins and ends in quiet and mystery, taking many interesting paths along the way."

Rihm, 62, a professor at Germany's Karlsruhe University of Music, has been a composer-in-residence at music festivals in Lucerne and Salzburg. He has written more than 400 pieces in every classical musical genre, making him one of the most prolific composers of his generation.

Besides the Berlin Philharmonic and BBC Symphony Orchestra, a wide variety of other orchestras have performed his works, including the Vienna Philharmonic, SWR Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Essen Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orkest Amsterdam, New York Philharmonic and Cleveland Orchestra.

In 2013, Rihm was promoted to the rank of commandeur in the Ordre des Arts and des Lettres, a French society honoring the world's most outstanding artists and writers. He also holds Germany's Distinguished Service Cross and Grand Cross of the Order of Merit with Star, the Royal Academy of Music Bach Prize, Prix de Composition and Musical de la Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco, Ernst von Siemens Music Award and Robert Schumann Prize for Poetry and Music.

Five Grawemeyer Award winners are being named this week. The university presents the prizes annually for outstanding works in music composition, ideas improving world order, psychology and education and gives a religion prize jointly with Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

Isabella, the Ottawa-born country singer/songwriter, will headline the Holiday Train shows beginning tonight in Hamilton, Ontario and ride the U.S. train until its final stop, Weyburn, Saskatchewan on December 17.

NEW YORK, Nov. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Media Group has pulled from FiOS TV the Fox channel that they own in the Massachusetts market. Verizon is diligently negotiating with Cox for a retransmission deal that will be fair and reasonable for our customers.

It probably seems like two big companies slugging it out while customers are pushed aside, even punished. But believe me, we're taking a stand for our customers. You don't have to take my word for it.

This behavior by Cox is apparently standard operating procedure. The American Television Alliance issued a release about this situation on Nov. 26. In it, ATVA spokesman Brian Frederick is quoted saying:

"In the past two years, Cox has blacked out viewers in at least 11 different markets. Cox is clearly more interested in their own profits than letting TV viewers in New England enjoy some TV time on the couch with friends and family."

While this is a pattern of behavior from Cox, overall it's about a much bigger issue that, unfortunately, puts consumers on the front lines.

Content Costs Are Rising Out of Control: Consumers Pay the Price

The average bill for basic cable in the United States rose 6.5 percent in 2012, and the average bill for expanded basic cable increased 5.1 percent, according to a May International Business Times story citing a new study from the Federal Communications Commission. Rising programming costs account for a large part of those increases. The per-channel cost for cable customers rose 2.1 percent in 2012, or 48 cents per channel, and retransmission fees charged by the major broadcasters are expected to rise an additional 10 to 12 percent per year over the next three years.

The ever-increasing cost of retransmission deals and content is making the pay-TV market more and more difficult for everyone. Eventually, even the content we love becomes unaffordable.

So, how did we get here?

The current content provider/pay-TV business model is based upon a revenue-sharing agreement known as affiliate fees and/or retransmission revenue. Basically, a portion of the TV bill customers pay finds its way back to these content providers on a per-channel basis, and the rates vary based on the network and program involved and the fees required by the content provider.

That business model is flawed, Verizon's CEO Lowell McAdam said at a recent Goldman Sachs investor's conference.

And here's why:


-- The share of retransmission fees as a portion of total revenue paid to
content providers - those fees a carrier like Verizon pays to the owner
of a local network affiliated channel - is expected to rise to a 10.5%
share in 2014; 11.4% in 2015; 12.1% in 2016; and 12.5% in 2017,
according to an April 17 Media Post story based on an SNL Kagan study.
-- At a late April cable industry conference in Los Angeles, Jim O'Neill
(@JimONeillMedia) reported that Time Warner Cable Chairman and CEO Rob
Marcus said content costs "are problematic to the sustainability of our
ecosystem." Reinforcing McAdam's point from the Goldman Sachs
conference, Marcus added that the industry needs to "figure out a
different business model."
-- Like the rest of the industry, Time Warner Cable has been facing
significant cost pressure, as the cost of programming content has
rapidly increased. Since the beginning of 2010, the company has had to
contend with a 24-percent rise in content costs per subscriber. Comcast
has also seen a 20-percent rise in just two years.
At Verizon, we face similar pressures. That brings us to where we are today with Cox Media Group and its outrageous retransmission demands.

It's unfortunate that Cox has decided to deny our FiOS customers its FOX programming because we won't cave in to those unreasonable demands. Cox has a history of digging in its heels when it was in our position and had been asked to commit to a similar deal. Consider this from a release they issued in Dec., 2012 regarding their negotiations with Raycom:


-- Raycom has pulled their programming from Cox's lineup for Cox customers
in Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Louisiana and Arizona. Cox's agreement with
Raycom Media expired at 11:59 p.m., December 31, 2012. Raycom is
withholding their programming because Cox won't give them a price
increase that's 250% higher than what Cox already pays them for
programming that is available for free over the air. Exorbitant
increases - like the one that Raycom is demanding - increase cable bills
every year.
No one wants to see this with Cox and FiOS.

We sincerely hope that cooler, more reasonable heads at Cox will prevail, and that we can soon have the Cox-owned FOX stations back on FiOS in the Massachusetts and Providence market, at a cost to us that won't ultimately negatively affect our customers' home budgets.

Shareholders Approve Asset Sale & Related Transaction Agreements

(NYSE: STV) ("China Digital TV" or the "Company"), the leading provider of conditional access ("CA") systems and comprehensive services to China's expanding digital television market, today provided a further update regarding the progress of the Company's asset restructuring (the "Restructuring"), as referred to in press releases dated June 13, October 7, and October 27, 2014, respectively.

As announced in a press release dated November 27, 2014, at an extraordinary general meeting of China Digital TV, shareholders of China Digital TV approved the sale of the Company's CA, network broadcasting platform and video-on-demand businesses through the sale of a 100% equity interest in its indirectly wholly-owned subsidiary, Beijing Super TV Co., Ltd. ("Super TV"), to Shanghai Tongda Venture Capital Co., Ltd. ("Tongda Venture"), as contemplated by a share transfer agreement dated October 9, 2014 (as amended and supplemented by a supplementary agreement dated October 27, 2014, the "Share Transfer Agreement"), and adopted and approved the Share Transfer Agreement and the transactions contemplated thereby, as well as certain ancillary agreements (the "Ancillary Agreements") in connection therewith and the transactions contemplated thereby.

Tongda Venture has informed the Company that its shareholders approved the transaction contemplated by the Share Transfer Agreement and the Ancillary Agreements at Tongda Venture's extraordinary general meetings of shareholders held today.

The Restructuring remains subject to review and approval by relevant regulatory authorities, including the China Securities Regulatory Commission and the PRC Ministry of Commerce. The Company will update the market with further details as appropriate. The Restructuring is expected to be subject to close scrutiny by the regulators amid increasingly stringent standards for similar transactions. The new partnership with Toyota, along with existing sponsors Comcast XFINITY and McDonald's, are examples of national brands who are utilizing the multi-platform touch points of Interactive One's parent - Radio One, Inc. - to reach Black consumers with a 360-degree perspective. HelloBeautiful Interludes Live! premiered online in 2013, and has since become a cross-platform original programming collaboration between TV One and Interactive One, with new episodes premiering quarterly on both TV and at HelloBeautiful.com.

The integrations of McDonald's, Toyota and XFINITY into Interludes Live! include several creative elements. With the XFINITY Lounge on site, concert guests were treated to a dedicated area where they could relax and unwind prior to the concert, while sharing their Ledisi experience via social media. For Toyota, Radio One, Inc.'s integrated marketing arm One Solution has created custom content including a vignette around Toyota Camry's "Bold" theme to air online and on TV during the special. In addition to these experiences, short-form webisodes are being produced (three for each sponsor), featuring performances, interviews and other footage exclusive to each brand, and available online leading into the November 29 premiere. The brands are also being featured in promotions across TV, online and radio, including promotional spots, tune-in messages, and a ticket giveaway.

As a returning, lead sponsor, Comcast XFINITY will once again stream the full program on its CelebrateBlackTV.com destination, also on Saturday, November 29. In addition, the episode will be available on video-on-demand for XFINITY cable customers for 30 days following the premiere.

HelloBeautiful Interludes Live!: Ledisi will feature songs from the eight-time GRAMMY-nominated singer's recently-released album The Truth. The performance features soul-stirring renditions of her past hits such as Bravo, Pieces of Me and as well as her latest fan favorite - Like This as well as other songs from her latest studio effort, The Truth. Additionally, fans will be treated to an exclusive look at the woman behind the melody as Ledisi sits down for a candid discussion on the various influences and training that has shaped her sound over the years, breaks down the meanings of some behind her tracks and shares some of the biggest lessons learned throughout her career.
