PERPIGNAN, France, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Getty Images photographer Shaul Schwarz has won the highly acclaimed Arthus Bertrand Visa d'Or News award announced at this year's Visa Pour L'Image international photojournalism festival in Perpignan, France.
"Winning this award means so much to me given the caliber of photojournalistic talent across the globe that I was up against,'' said Shaul Schwarz. "It is important for people to see this subject, addressing the uprooting of Israeli settlers, that is an inner struggle for Israel. To have this work that I shot in my country recognized, and especially at Visa pour l'Image, is a very special honor."
Picture editors from a selection of some of the world's leading media outlets including Business Week (USA), El Mundo (Spain), National Geographic Magazine (France) and Sunday Times (UK) presented a shortlist of four nominees in each category and a second jury in Perpignan voted for the final winner in each of the News and Magazine categories.
"We are delighted that Shaul Schwarz has been presented with this highly- coveted award,'' said Nick Evans-Lombe, Senior Vice President Imagery and Services, Getty Images. "The Visa d'Or is a reflection of his passion, captured in this recent work on the disengagement in Gaza and for the exceptional quality of work he continues to produce."
The festival, now in its 18th year, brings together the cream of the world's photojournalists, editorial and industry leaders and is a key event in the editorial calendar.
Also nominated for the Visa d'Or Magazine award was Tom Stoddart, for his work on Chernobyl. Other Getty Images photographers whose work can be seen at the event's evening projections include Ghaith Abdul Ahad, Marvi Lacar, Per Anders Pettersson, Uriel Sinai and Marco Di Lauro.
