SupportKerry08.com Aims to Get a Jump on GOP
ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Although Sen. John Kerry hasn't officially thrown his hat into the 2008 presidential race, one Web site wants to make sure Americans don't forget the top Democratic candidate of 2004. Launched last week, SupportKerry08.com (http://www.supportkerry08.com/) is selling trendy wristbands and bumper stickers bearing a simple but memorable slogan: "Support Kerry '08."
"For 48% of the American people, this fight is not over," stated Annette Bogan, co-founder of SupportKerry08.com. "57,288,974 Americans believed in John Kerry on November 2nd, 2004. We believe that John Kerry is truly the man that can lead this great nation. It is imperative that we display our confidence in him while keeping him a household name right up until the next presidential election."
It may seem a little early in the game to come out in full support of one candidate, but, said Bogan, now is the time to act. "The bottom line is that the GOP propaganda machine began its re-election effort back in 2000. That's a pretty huge head start," Bogan explained. "We can't let history repeat itself in 2008. By starting today, we can level the playing field."
Plenty of Americans agree with Bogan: In its first seven days online, SupportKerry08.com sold 13,000 "Support Kerry '08" wristbands. Made of durable blue silicon, the wristbands are available for $1 each, with discounts available for bulk orders; bumper stickers are also $1. In addition to the merchandise, SupportKerry08.com links to other progressive Web sites and provides discussion forums.
The initial response is encouraging to Bogan. And, as word gets out about SupportKerry08.com, she expects to see many more Americans sporting the Kerry wristbands.
It might just be the shot in the arm the Democratic party needs. Nearly all Democrats acknowledge the necessity of unifying efforts to unseat the Republicans in 2006 and 2008, but despite that consensus, no one has yet emerged as a strong leader since Sen. Kerry and running mate Sen. John Edwards conceded the 2004 election in November. With continued support of Sen. Kerry, said Bogan, that could change.
"The integrity of our candidate and our ability to promote his true strengths is critical to winning in '08," said Bogan. "John Kerry has proven time and again that he is an honest, hardworking, patriotic, caring and devoted politician who is genuinely concerned about regular Americans. It is our goal to show our loyalty to John Kerry as he has shown his loyalty towards all Americans. Now more than ever, we must band together and send John Kerry the message that we still have his back."
