Coalition Launches Advertising Push in Support of Clear Skies Legislation

Coalition Launches Advertising Push in Support of Clear Skies Legislation

WASHINGTON, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Coalition for Affordable and Reliable Energy (CARE) today began running a series of advertisements to help promote the Clear Skies Act of 2005, a bill introduced in the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee last month.

"There are 56 members of our diverse coalition -- from farmers and bakers to seniors and union workers -- who are advocating more progress on reducing power plant emissions without killing the economy," said Paul Oakley, CARE's executive director. "We must strike a balance between improved environmental protection and continued economic growth. The Senate legislation does the trick."

The advertising, part of an integrated communications program, highlights that the Clear Skies Act will reduce key air emissions from power plants by 70 percent from 2002 levels, and for the first time set specific requirements for reductions in mercury emissions.

The bill, S.131, was introduced by Sens. James Inhofe and George Voinovich.

"This legislation builds on the great strides power plants have already made reducing emissions," Oakley said. "And Clear Skies uses the approach that was so successful in reducing acid rain, by offering flexibility in how to achieve the mandated reductions."

CARE was formed in 2000 to advocate adoption of a comprehensive energy policy that will enable the United States to meet its energy needs, and strike a sensible balance among the nation's social, economic, national security, environmental and energy goals. Today, CARE is actively engaged in a wide variety of energy and environmental issues, but the coalition's fundamental mission has remained the same: ensuring the availability of affordable and reliable supplies of energy for America's families and businesses.
