ASSASSINS - Broadway Musical - August 3-4 & 9-11, 2007 at 7:30 pm and August 5 at 2 pm - Norman Mitby Theatre, Madison WI

An on and off-broadway hit, Assassins is brought to you by Music Theatre of Madison and sponsored by Van Wagner & Wood, S.C.

MADISON, Wis., July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Music Theatre of Madison, a new professional theatre, will continue its summer season of musicals based on true stories with the Stephen Sondheim cult classic Assassins, August 3-4 and 9-11 at 7:30pm and August 5th at 2:00pm. The musical will be performed at the Norman Mitby Theatre, on the MATC Truax Campus, 3550 Anderson Street, in Madison.

Assassins features music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by John Weidman. The musical premiered off Broadway in 1990 and had a successful revival on Broadway in 2004, winning the Tony Award for best revival. Nine presidential assassins or would be assassins are profiled: John Wilkes Booth (assassinated Lincoln), Charles Guiteau (assassinated Garfield), Leon Czolgosz (assassinated McKinley), Guissepe Zangara (attempted to assassinate president elect Franklin Roosevelt), Lee Harvey Oswald (assassinated Kennedy), Samuel Byck (attempted to assassinate Nixon), Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme (attempted to assassinate Ford), Sara Jane Moore (attempted to assassinate Ford), and John Hinckley, Jr. (attempted to assassinate Reagan). The assassins live in an ambiguous world in which the bizarre motivations behind their acts are explored. John Wilkes Booth serves as their leader, encouraging them that "everbody's got the right to their dreams". This unique musical is strongly rooted in fact and provides numerous educational opportunities.

Assassins is the second show in Music Theatre of Madison's season, which highlights musicals based on true stories. The season began in late June with The Sound of Music, and will continue after Assassins with a concert performance of the lesser known musical Floyd Collins, about a Kentucky caver who became trapped underground. The theatre's mission is to challenge, educate, and enrich audiences by performing musicals that illustrate unique ideas and subject matter.

Assassins features Aly Bitter, Kevin Blakeslee, Amber Nicole Dilger, Mikhael Farah, Tracy Hines, John Jajewski, Christopher Karbo, Sarah Melton, Jace Nichols, Roger Allan Rickman, Alex Roller, Bart Terrell and Drew Wolff. It will be directed by Meghan Randolph and music directed by Patrick Christians.
