It's Not Your Grandpa's Symphony: DSO Launches 8 Days In June
Cutting Edge, Weeklong Festival Explores "Creation and Conflict,"
Welcomes in New Era of Classical Music
WHAT: Get ready for a whole new way to experience the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra. On Thursday, June 21, the DSO and the
Max M. Fisher Music Center launch 8 Days in June, a
weeklong music festival (June 21 -28) that is designed to
challenge traditional ideas about classical music and the
role of symphony orchestras today. Featuring classical
and chamber music, jazz, film, theater, spoken word,
visual art and more, the festival presentations are all
connected by the theme "Creation and Conflict."
MORE: In addition to a vast cross-section of genres -- and
featuring stars such as Chuck D, Wynton Marsalis and F.
Murray Abraham -- the festival breaks with convention in
other ways:
-- The Orchestra will eschew formal attire (no monkey
suits!) and dress in all-black.
-- All concerts will allow patrons to bring drinks to
seats, and latecomers will be seated immediately.
-- Unique lighting and audio-visual components will
enhance concerts.
-- Performances will be introduced by Festival Host Tom
Allen, of CBC Radio.
-- A festival lounge will be open pre-concert through
midnight each night, offering full bar, food service
and club music.
-- An art installation by students from College of
Creative Studies will be on display, with a parallel
exhibit in the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.
