Child Support Is More Than Just Money, Says Filmmaker, Angelo Lobo
Child Support Is More Than Just Money, Says Filmmaker, Angelo Lobo
LOS ANGELES, June 13 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "I'm a dad, not a wallet?" What may prompt millions of noncustodial dads to say this phrase -- or at least think it? This is just one question raised by Angelo Lobo, producer and director of the upcoming full-length documentary "Support? System Down."
Noncustodial parents, mostly fathers, say financial child support has been deemed by some officials as the most important thing they can contribute to their children. But, many ask: "What about the emotional support I can provide?" These parents say this is what matters more to their children. Most parents do support their children emotionally and financially. They don't have to be convinced to do so.
Many of these dads, and some moms, can't even get their "visitation" court orders enforced. This is wrong. They want equal parenting -- not "visitor" status. This is what they say is best for children and families, and a rapidly growing number of people nationwide -- men and women -- agree.
"The situation is beyond absurd. We have loving, fit fathers, who want to be there and support their children, who are unfairly prevented from doing so. On the other hand, we have men proven by DNA testing not to be the dad, yet they are forced to financially support children they may not even know and did not father," said Lobo.
To correct problems with the current family court and child support system, we must be aware of the real problems. There are many.
"A great Father's Day gift would be to sort this mess out as a society. At least listen to the plight of millions of dads and the many women who love them. The broken system adversely affects entire families, including men, women, and children -- grandparents, too.
"Both mothers and fathers are tired of being unfairly vilified, pursued and stereotyped. They say it doesn't help their children or families when the main breadwinner is devastated, humiliated, threatened, or constantly pursued by a misguided and ill-informed system. Unfair, illogical, harsh, punitive measures against alleged nonpayers, such as lifting driver's and professional licenses and jail, are not helping children and families," said Lobo.

"I wanted to convey these loving parents' stories in a compelling way and to give these parents a powerful voice. Children want and need both parents in their lives. Children suffer and miss their parents when they're unjustly separated from them due to divorce or family breakup. They need adequate time with both parents, which often doesn't happen in our current system," said Lobo.
There are millions of parents, children, and families suffering under this unfair, overly punitive system that currently hurts many more families than it helps.
