BACKGROUND: Wal-Mart Voices of Color is a unique, multidimensional
program that aims to give "voice" to a broader and more
positive depiction of African-American images. VOC was
born out of the company's desire to acknowledge talented
African-American filmmakers and pay homage to their
influence in the film industry. The company does this
through sponsorship of African-American television
programming and major events celebrating black life in
film.

Through the VOC commitment, Wal-Mart has funded two
compelling documentaries. In 2005, Buffalo Soldiers, about
the all-black cavalries and infantries of the late 1800s.
Earlier this year, The Will to Survive: The Story of the
Gullah/Geechee Nation.

Now, Wal-Mart takes its Voices of Color commitment "On
Tour!" The company serves this year as official sponsor of
the prestigious Urbanworld Vibe Film Festival in New York
and other similar star-studded events over the coming
months. In total, Wal-Mart Voices of Color On Tour
includes director awards and other funding for three of the
nation's most highly acclaimed events honoring black
cinema.
