Local TV News Covers Health a Lot, But Not Always Well

Local television newscasts, where most Americans get most of their news, are packed with medical stories and health information. But the first-ever national study of that coverage finds many problems with it, and sees room for improvement by both TV stations and the health experts whose work fills the news.

In the March issue of the American Journal of Managed Care, researchers from the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin-Madison report results from an in-depth analysis of health coverage on local TV newscasts from across the country.

In all, health and medical stories comprised eleven percent of the news portion of late-evening newscasts in the one-month period studied from the nation's top fifty media markets.

Consumer Confidence Drops Due to Darkening Expectations, According to R-B- C CASH Index

After an upturn in February two thousand and six, consumer confidence dropped in March, reflecting the uncertainty American consumers have about future economic conditions, according to the most recent results of the R-B-C CASH or Consumer Attitudes and Spending by Household Index, which measured the attitudes of one thousand Americans. Issued by R-B-C Financial Group, the R-B-C CASH Index for March stands at eighty-six-point-two, a considerable decrease from ninety-six-point-one in February. R-B-C's CASH Index is a monthly national survey of consumer attitudes on the current and future state of local economies, personal financial situations, savings, and confidence to make large investments.
