Texas Lonestar Rollergirls and Los Angeles Derby Dolls Collide in Downtown Austin for Special SXSW 'Double Derby' Weekend
AUSTIN, Texas, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- This year's South by Southwest Music Festival will truly be all about rock and roll -- with an emphasis on the "roll" -- when the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls host the L.A. Derby Dolls for the second-ever interstate, all-girl, banked-track bout on Thursday, March 16.
After a few tumultuous weeks during which their normal home, the Crockett Center, was closed due to lack of permits, the TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls are looking forward to rolling back into action in a big way. But they'll be up against the ready-to-rumble Derby Dolls, who are making the trek to Texas with the hope of bringing the first inter-league, all-girl, banked-track victory to the Sunshine State.
The exciting action begins when Austin Mayor Will Wynn and City Manager Toby Futrell blow the whistle to start the first "jam" at the Austin Convention Center, which will be temporarily transformed into the TXRD "Thunderdome," complete with the Rollergirls' vintage banked track once used by the famous Bay City Bombers.
What: TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls vs. L.A. Derby Dolls
When: Thursday, March 16 -- Doors at 7 p.m.
Where: Austin Convention Center, 500 East Caesar Chavez, Downtown Austin
This bout will also be broadcast live on the Internet in partnership with Austin.com. There will be a charge to view the bout online.
In addition to the historic Lonestars vs. Derby Dolls bout on March 16, the Lonestar Rollergirls will be offering fans a second bout on Sunday, March 19. This second bout will pit the Rhinestone Cowgirls against their bitter rivals, the Holy Rollers.
About TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls
TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls is a skater-owned and operated Austin, TX-based sports and entertainment company. TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls promote friendship and competition between determined, beautiful, unique and, most of all, tough women. Founded in 2001 by She-EOs Anya Jack, April Herman, Heather Burdick and Nancy Lynn.
TXRD has captured the public's attention and has quickly become a Texas favorite. In 2003, TXRD purchased an original banked roller derby track and has since been providing derby fans a new twist on the original style of roller derby. In 2005, our league participated in the filming of the television show, "Rollergirls," a 13-episode show that chronicled the lives of a few of our skaters, on and off the track.
The Lonestar Rollergirls are excited to be a part of the nation-wide revival of all forms of derby -- banked and flat track -- and encourage derby fans new and old to check out a league nearby.
