Sprint Extends CDMA Infrastructure Supply Agreement with Motorola; Adds Mobile Broadband Commitment Across Markets with Motorola Gear
Supply Agreement Renewal Estimated at $450 million
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Dec. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) has been awarded an extension of its existing CDMA infrastructure supply agreement with Sprint (NYSE:FON) through the end of 2006. The renewal, estimated at $450 million, includes CDMA2000 1X base station and core equipment, software and services, and a commitment to deploy Motorola's high- speed mobile broadband CDMA2000 1x EV-DO solution in several markets served by Motorola infrastructure. The agreement also covers a potential broadband data upgrade to 1xEV-DO Release A or 1xEV-DV Release D technologies.
Sprint's initial Wireless High Speed Data (WHSD) service offering, based on CDMA2000 1xEV-DO with a peak data rate of up to 2.4 Mbps, will improve enterprise communications particularly for mobile workers who require phone or laptop access to corporate applications such as e-mail and intranets.
"Motorola's mobile broadband solution will help Sprint meet its customers' demand for faster wireless data speeds and wireless access to information and entertainment while on the go," said Bruce Stone, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola's CDMA Systems Division, Global Telecom Solutions Sector. "Our unique IP backhaul capability from each site will help provide Sprint with cost-effective bandwidth to carry anticipated increases in data traffic."
Motorola's CDMA radio access network design, with a migration path that requires a straightforward card upgrade at each cell site to enable 1xEV-DO data capability and installation of incremental core mobility management equipment to facilitate connectivity to the Internet, allows Sprint to maximize re-use of its existing equipment to support mobile broadband.
"Sprint's 1xEV-DO deployment makes efficient use of our existing resources and will help Sprint widen its industry lead in wireless data services," said Oliver Valente, Sprint vice president for Technology Development. "Sprint customers will experience superior application and service performance, with mobile device data speeds up to 10 times faster than today's network. Higher- speed data connectivity will significantly improve individual as well as enterprise communications."
