Jenny Jones Responds to the Nation's Economic Crisis
Former Talk Show Host Giving Another Million Dollars to America's Communities
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Talk show host and philanthropist Jenny Jones announced today that she will donate an additional $1 million of her own money to continue her innovative "Jenny's Heroes" community grant program (www.jennysheroes.com).
Jones initially planned to give away $1 million in 2008 to struggling communities across America and will reach that goal with her final $100,000 holiday grant this month. Due to the current economic crisis and the overwhelming number of applications, she says she can't quit now. Jenny is pledging a second million dollars to fund Jenny's Heroes into 2009 and beyond.
"So many people are struggling in this economy, I simply have to continue the program," says Jenny Jones, philanthropist and founder of Jenny's Heroes. "It's exciting to think how many more neighborhoods and towns can benefit from the kind and giving people who want nothing for themselves, but only want to help others."
Jenny represents a new breed of celebrity philanthropist, going beyond the "big check." She is intimately involved in the grant process, reading through each of the thousands of applications she receives, and personally selecting the recipients. Her focus is primarily on smaller communities where fundraising is extremely difficult, especially now.
Jenny's Heroes provides grants of up to $25,000 to fund projects that promise long-term benefits. Through the 50 grant recipients so far, funds have been used to provide everything from library books, school computers, firefighting gear, nursing home upgrades, sports equipment, free dental services, wheelchairs, coats for children in domestic violence shelters, even a running track at a women's prison. Whether it is the father who donated $25,000 worth of toys, books and computers to the Children's Hospital where his 4-year-old daughter receives cancer treatment or the janitor who donated new equipment to the nursing school that he cleans every night, Jenny's Heroes all share one quality: selflessness.
