Unique Elections Sidebar Story: Deaf Radio 'Listeners' To Gather for Elections Broadcast in Washington

Media Invited to Attend Event at NPR Labs

WASHINGTON, October 28, 2008 - Dozens of local deaf citizens will gather at NPR Labs in Washington, DC, next week to see live radio coverage of the presidential elections for the first time. Media organizations are invited to cover the event as part of their expanded elections programming.

The event is being coordinated by NPR, Harris Corporation and Towson University as part of an international initiative to develop technology and services that will make radio broadcasts accessible to the world's deaf population by leveraging the capabilities of HD Radio(TM).

The event is being held at NPR Labs' facility November 4 from 8:00 - 11:00 p.m. ET at 635 Massachusetts Ave. NW. Representatives from deaf advocacy groups and event coordinators will be available for interviews. There will also be unique visuals as well, including scrolling text on screens being viewed by deaf attendees. We can also try to accommodate media interested in earlier access during testing being done on November 3.
