STUFF HAPPENS When You're Bill Nye the Science Guy!

- Planet Green's New Series STUFF HAPPENS Premieres Tuesday, September 2 at 9PM ET -

SILVER SPRING, Md., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Emmy(R) Award-winning host Bill Nye (scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor), best known to television audiences as "Bill Nye the Science Guy," returns to television this fall in a new series on Planet Green, STUFF HAPPENS. Premiering on Tuesday, September 2 at 9PM ET, STUFF HAPPENS host Nye looks at all the stuff in our lives -- from the food we eat to the clothes we wear -- to unlock the secrets of everyday things before and after we use them, and reveals the unintended consequences of all the stuff we take for granted. "Bill Nye the Science Guy" ran from 1992 to 1998, and featured Nye who enthusiastically demonstrated science experiments with flashy video effects and wacky comedy.

Stuff. It's created, purchased, eaten, moved, loved and used -- but where did it come from in the first place and what happens after we are through with it? In STUFF HAPPENS, Nye takes viewers on a journey as each item's life cycle is investigated and uncovered. Along the way, he illustrates how simple and easy changes can reduce the environmental cost of things we love.

In the premiere episode, Nye explores the private porcelain palace called the bathroom. Some of the stuff that happens there may be unmentionable, but it all has an environmental impact -- an impact we can reduce in painless ways that could make a big difference. Nye tackles everything from toothpaste (does it endanger orangutans in Borneo?), to cosmetics (how many pounds of chemicals does your skin absorb over a lifetime of using cosmetics?), to toilets (what kinds of "super bugs" are growing in our municipal water systems due to flushing old prescription drugs down the toilet?) Can Nye save the planet from the peril of sludge?

Nye, a 1977 graduate of New York's Cornell University, went to work as an aeronautics engineer for Boeing in the Seattle area. His part-time occupation as a stand-up comedian eventually gave way to a full-time career as an entertainer, and by the end of the 1980s Nye was a regular on Almost Live, a sketch comedy show on Seattle television. He took the "Bill Nye the Science Guy" persona -- lab coat, bow tie and corny jokes -- and developed it into his successful educational show for kids. Since the show ended its run, Nye has published books for kids, hosted other TV programs and made appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Fox News, CNN's Larry King Live, VH-1, The Weather Channel and has a recurring role on the CBS series Numb3rs.

How things work has always fascinated Bill Nye, and now he explores how STUFF HAPPENS. Nye is on a mission -- a mission to educate the world one person at a time about the joy of science in a fun, entertaining, and eco-friendly way. Science can come in many forms but if you take the time to understand it, as Nye does on a daily basis, he hopes to help people understand the world a little better. Nye is a visiting professor at Cornell University, from which he has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also holds three Honorary Doctorate degrees.
