COACHELLA, Calif., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Ramon Ayala has more than 100 albums and countless awards to his credit, and now he can add to that list a key to the City of Coachella. Ayala was awarded the key to the city by Mayor Eduardo Garcia during Ayala's sold-out concert at Spotlight 29 Casino yesterday.

Garcia said, "Ramon Ayala is recognized around the world as a pioneer and a leader in norteno, conjunto and tejano music, inspiring and thrilling his audiences. It is because of that leadership and inspiration that I am proud to welcome him to Coachella and to award him a key to our fine city here at one of our leading businesses, Spotlight 29 Casino."

Garcia presented Ayala the key after the third song of a sold-out concert in the casino's Spotlight Showroom, which was filled to its 2,200-seat capacity with adoring Ayala fans. Introducing the Mayor was Univision anchor Myra Perez.

Critics have said Ayala's influence on modern music cannot be overstated, as most norteno groups today use his style as their musical foundation and perform their songs. In the 1990s, when tejano (the modern version of the conjunto style Ayala practically invented) revisited its accordion roots, with synthesizers often replacing the accordion, it was the great master's sound they emulated.

Now generally considered a classic musician, Ayala has won multiple American and Latin Grammy awards, and now, a key to the City of Coachella.
