Reducing Pain via Hypnosis, This Week on Your Cancer Today (TM)

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Medical professionals have long sought new treatments for reducing the pain, anxiety, and discomfort associated with cancer surgery. A new therapy, based on hypnosis, is currently being tested as a method to alleviate many of the side effects of surgery.

Your Cancer Today interviews Guy H. Montgomery, PhD, from the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Montgomery's study looked at two groups of patients facing surgery for breast cancer. The group that received hypnosis prior to surgery reported less pain, nausea, and anxiety after surgery than the control group.

There was a cost benefit as well, the average hypnosis patient reduced the cost of treatment by an average of $772.00. Dr. Montgomery is optimistic that hypnosis will provide similar health and financial benefits with other forms of cancer.

A new treatment protocol for head and neck cancer is proving more effective than traditional treatment. The new treatment features the use of Taxotere(R) and has resulted in a 30% decrease in mortality in head and neck cancer patients. Dr. Marshall Posner, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Center provides the results of his study on head and neck cancer. Dr. Posner reports that the cure rate for many of these cancers is now greater than 80%.
