Belo's KMOV-TV Wins a Peabody Award; Belo Stations Outpace All Media Companies With Eight Awards Since 2000

DALLAS, April 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Belo Corp. (NYSE:BLC) announced today KMOV-TV, its CBS affiliate in St. Louis, has been awarded a 2006 George Foster Peabody Award. KMOV was one of only four local television stations in the nation to receive this prestigious honor.

KMOV was recognized for its "Left Behind: The Failure of East St. Louis Schools," a series of 21 reports over seven months that found the school system had violated state and federal special-education requirements and uncovered widespread political and nepotistic hiring by the school board. At the direction of Genie Garner, acting news director for KMOV, Reporter Craig Cheatham and Photographer/Editor Gary Womack captured the dramatic series as it unfolded.

"We are extraordinarily proud to be honored with the prestigious Peabody Award," said Allan Cohen, president/General Manager of KMOV. "This is a true reflection on the entire staff and the news product that we are dedicated to bringing to the St. Louis community."

This marks the eighth Peabody Award earned by Belo television stations and executives since 2000: WFAA-TV in Dallas/Fort Worth (2 awards), KHOU-TV in Houston (2 awards), WCNC-TV in Charlotte, WWL-TV in New Orleans and former Belo executive H. Martin "Marty" Haag for lifetime achievement.

Dunia Shive, Belo's president and chief operating officer, said, "We are very proud of KMOV for their leadership performance and ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional journalism to the St. Louis region. The employees at KMOV continue to distinguish themselves in local news coverage and quality local programming."

So far in 2007, KMOV also has received the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation's Service to America Partnership Award for outstanding community service and two regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.

The Peabody Awards were established in 1940 and are administered by the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The Peabody recognizes distinguished achievement and meritorious public service by stations, networks, producing organizations and individuals. The award will be presented to KMOV on Monday, June 4 at a ceremony in New York City.
