Texas Instruments Offers Spanish-Language Classroom Activities for 'We All Use Math Every Day(TM)' Education Initiative
Educators Have Access to More Tools for Teaching Students How Math Impacts Their Lives Using Hit TV Series 'NUMB3RS'
DALLAS and LOS ANGELES, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN) (TI) is continuing to enhance the resources behind its award-winning "We All Use Math Every Day" (WAUMED) math education initiative by providing classroom activities in Spanish. The Spanish-language handouts for select classroom activities will help more educators and students across the nation see how math is relevant in everyday life.
The "We All Use Math Every Day" initiative was developed by TI and CBS, in association with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), to inspire students to achieve more in math by showing how the subject is relevant to their lives today and in the future. The initiative, using the hit television show, NUMB3RS, provides free classroom activities for educators online at http://www.cbs.com/numb3rs that help students understand how the math they are learning in the classroom applies to the real world. The activities explore the math derived from the concepts used to solve cases in the FBI crime-solving show.
The Spanish-language activities are posted alongside the corresponding English-language activities which relate to each week's show episode for season three of "NUMB3RS." All of the activities are developed jointly by TI and NCTM and are written by leading mathematicians and classroom educators.
"My students have been much more excited about learning math when they can use the 'We All Use Math Every Day' program in the classroom. They ask for the activities almost every day and are engaged in the discussion," said Lisa Suarez-Caraballo, math teacher at Luis Munoz Marin School in Cleveland, Ohio. "This initiative has made my job easier to teach the concepts teens will need to succeed in school and later in life."
Since "We All Use Math Every Day" launched in September 2005, thousands of educators are downloading the classroom activities on a weekly basis and over 40,000 have signed up for Teacher Kits, helping to inspire more than four million students to become more engaged and interested in math.
Educators who visit http://www.cbs.com/numb3rs can download the free Spanish- and English-language activities and sign up to receive the free Teacher Kit which includes program information, classroom activities, a classroom poster and bumper sticker. Those who register for a Teacher Kit also will receive a weekly e-mail newsletter packed with classroom activities and insider information about the "We All Use Math Every Day" initiative.
"NUMB3RS," which premiered on January 23, 2005, focuses on FBI Agent Don Eppes (Rob Morrow) who recruits his mathematical genius brother Charlie (David Krumholtz) to help solve a wide range of challenging crimes in Los Angeles. Inspired by actual cases, the series depicts how police work and mathematics provide unexpected revelations and answers to the most perplexing criminal questions.
