'The Haunted Manor' in Chicago

'The Haunted Manor' in Chicago

The full stage production of Stanislaw Moniuszko's 'The Haunted Manor' will take place at the Rosemont Theatre on February 11, 2007 at 3pm

CHICAGO, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The Paderewski Symphony Orchestra (PaSO) of Chicago invites you to a very special musical event on Sunday, February 11, 2007 at 3pm, at the Rosemont Theatre. The event will feature over 200 performers, including 43 artists from Poland, with among them some of the most celebrated stars of the Polish stage. The Haunted Manor is a breathtaking comic opera in four acts written by Stanislaw Moniuszko, the father of Polish National Opera.

It was written for a specific purpose: to encourage the Polish people, and to bring them hope, and renew their faith at a time when they felt all but crushed. It was meant to strengthen and reignite the fighting spirit of a nation that had been repressed by years of foreign occupation. To achieve this, Moniuszko used the symbolic language of music and opera, to remind Poles of the beauty of their traditions, rhythms, dances and heritage. Under the pretext of telling the humorous tale of the adventures of two youths returning home from war, the composer brought back to life the days when Poland was one of the chief military powers in Europe, and its fierce cavalry was renowned and admired for its bravery and might.

It is no wonder that during the premiere it caused a genuine patriotic manifestation among the audience. The opera was banned by the Russian censor after three performances, and it had to wait 50 years for another showing. That is when it quickly became renowned as the most beautiful, most important, most wonderful of all Polish Operas. To this day it charms, entertains, and moves. It remains the most profound artistic embodiment of the culture, history, traditions and times, which gave rise to heroes like Tadeusz Kosciuszko and Casimir Pulaski, who fought to advance the cause of freedom in the world, and who remain Polish National icons to this day.

Artistically Moniuszko's 'Haunted Manor' is doubtlessly one of Europe's finest operas: its imaginative harmony, subtle but colorful instrumentation and, above all, a melodic inventiveness of great sophistication and a striking individuality of dramatic style, give it a captivating Polish atmosphere.

The Chicago Performance is performed under the auspices of the Senate of the Republic of Poland, Polish Ministry and Culture and National Heritage, and the Polish UNESCO Committee. The Opera will be performed in the Polish language, with English subtitles.
