Professor Yunus Will Emphasize Critical Role of Young People, Introduce the Green Children Pop Music Group To Reach World Youth
OSLO, Norway, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Muhammad Yunus, winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, will outline his vision and define the next steps needed to advance the microfinance campaign around the world at a final news conference before leaving Oslo on Tuesday, December 12, at 9:30 a.m. at the Colosseum Cinema Centre.
Professor Yunus also will highlight the importance of young people to the microcredit movement and will introduce members of The Green Children, who recently produced a music video in Bangladesh to celebrate the work of Professor Yunus and the Grameen Bank titled "Hear Me Now." The Green Children Foundation is active in supporting microcredit, education and health care issues for the poor.
Professor Yunus and the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh, which he founded, jointly will be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at a 1:00 p.m. ceremony in Oslo on Sunday, December 10. When announcing the award, the Nobel Peace Prize Committee said the award was given for their efforts, "to create economic and social benefit from below. Lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty."
Nearly seven million poor Bangladeshis, 97 percent of them women, have borrowed money from Grameen Bank since 1983. Ninety-eight percent of the loans are repaid.
