BigBand Networks Receives Two Emmy(R) Nominations for Switched Broadcast, Network-Based Time Shifting
National Television Academy acknowledges BigBand for advancements that can allow cable operators to significantly expand the amount of available television programming and pause or rewind TV programs
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- BigBand Networks, Inc., a leading provider of broadband multimedia infrastructure for video, voice and data, announced that it received two Emmy(R) Award nominations as part of the National Television Academy's Technology and Engineering Awards.
BigBand's switched broadcast technology was nominated for the Emmy in "Outstanding Achievement in Advanced Media Technology for the Creation of Non- Traditional Programs or Platforms." Technology limitations, particularly a lack of available cable spectrum, have traditionally limited the number of channels that cable operators can provide to subscribers. BigBand invented switched broadcast as a cost-effective way for cable operators to free up additional cable spectrum to significantly expand the amount of programming they provide to subscribers. Switched broadcast can allow operators to dramatically increase the number of television channels available to each subscriber, including more HDTV channels and VOD options. Several national cable operators are deploying the technology.
BigBand was also co-nominated with Time Warner Cable and several other companies for technology contributions to Time Warner Cable's 'Start Over' digital television feature. Start Over is designed to allow Time Warner Cable customers to jump to the beginning of a program in progress without any pre- planning or in-home recording devices. The Time Warner Cable service leverages network-based, time-shifting functionality enabled by BigBand's Broadband Multimedia-Service Router (BMR(R)) and other technologies to extend "on-demand" capability to live programming.
"Our technology platforms can enhance and personalize the TV experience for the viewer. Switched broadcast in particular can allow consumers to have more choice by making it easier and far less expensive to expand television channel lineups and rapidly scale the amount of HD programs available to each household," said Amir Bassan-Eskenazi, CEO of BigBand Networks. "We are thrilled to receive two Emmy nominations; among the greatest honors in the television industry. These nominations clearly recognize our leadership and innovation."
The winners of the 2006 Technology and Engineering Emmy will be announced at the opening night event for the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on January 8, 2007 in Las Vegas. For more information on The National Television Academy and the Emmy awards, visit http://www.emmyonline.org/.
