'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' DVD Draws Flood of Holiday Bargain Hunters to Overstock.com on First Day of Its '12 Days of Christmas' Campaign

SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Overstock.com(R) (NASDAQ:OSTK) (www.overstock.com) Web site experienced heavy congestion intermittently between noon and 2:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time today as holiday shoppers flooded the site to purchase the just-released "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" DVD at a special promotional price. As a result, some customers were unable to access the site.

Overstock.com announced yesterday that "Pirates of the Caribbean" DVD would go on sale at noon today for $9.99 for the first day of its "12 Days of Christmas" campaign (click here to read the press release). Patrick Byrne, CEO of Overstock.com, said, "Consumer response to the promotion was beyond anything we imagined, and we had a big imagination."

To alleviate site congestion and allow the IT team time to make performance enhancements to the site, Overstock.com temporarily turned off the inventory feed for the DVD. This resulted in a "sold out" message. Overstock.com will resume selling the DVD for $9.99 tonight at 7:00 p.m. EST, while supplies last.

"For the next 11 days we will continue to unveil one incredible bargain at noon Eastern Time. Our technologists' imaginations have now reached our marketing department's imagination."
