'Saint of 9/11' Tells the Stirring Story of FDNY Chaplain's Life and Death
Netflix Collaborates With IFC and Equality Forum to Bring the Film to the Nation on Fifth Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), the world's largest online DVD rental service, introduces a powerful documentary film, "Saint of 9/11," which celebrates in vivid testimonials the life and death of New York Fire Department Chaplain Mychal Judge.
Netflix holds the North American rights to the film and will be distributing it theatrically, on broadcast and on DVD. The film is being released in theaters day-and-date with VOD, through IFC and the 'IFC In Theaters' VOD platforms on Cablevision and Comcast. "Saint of 9/11" will be in theaters and on VOD beginning tomorrow. After its launch in theaters and on VOD, the film will also be available to Netflix subscribers beginning September 12. The DVD will be made available in stores this November through Hart Sharp Video.
The tragic death of Father Judge on Sept. 11, 2001 brought his life's work into sudden relief. Champion of the needy, rousing Irish-American balladeer and pioneering AIDS activist, Mychal Judge was a hero with many sides who, though we remember him primarily from 9/11, had many other days of triumph.
Revealed through the words of those he touched -- from Tom Van Essen, then head of the New York Fire Department, to Bill and Hillary Clinton -- Mychal was loved by many the world over. "Saint of 9/11" is the honestly told story of a quintessential Franciscan priest whose life's work far eclipsed his heroic death.
"Bringing important films like 'Saint of 9/11' to a broad national audience across multiple platforms is a key mission of Red Envelope Entertainment," said Bahman Naraghi, head of Red Envelope Entertainment. "We are excited to collaborate with such a strong group of partners to achieve this goal."
"Saint of 9/11" weaves together interviews with friends, colleagues, congregants and archival footage with Father Mychal's own words. Narrated by the British stage and screen actor Sir Ian McKellen and directed by Glenn Holsten, "Saint of 9/11" is produced by Equality Forum, with Malcolm Lazin as executive producer.
Equality Forum is a non-profit 501(c)(3) national and international GLBT civil rights organization. Equality Forum ( www.equalityforum.com ) undertakes high impact initiatives, produces documentary films, highlights gay history and presents annually the largest national and international GLBT civil rights forum.
Netflix is committed to providing consumers with access to the widest variety of films available. With over 65,000 titles, the Netflix catalog spans every major genre, from documentaries and dramas to comedies and how-to. To that end, Red Envelope Entertainment is acquiring and funding original content projects to increase consumer options and provide an innovative method for film distribution. While giving filmmakers a platform to expose less commercial projects to a broader audience, Red Envelope Entertainment looks to leverage its proprietary technology to offer subscribers unique and original content to which they wouldn't otherwise have access. This original content initiative creates a national distribution channel for films and entertainment programming otherwise not available to broad audiences.
