National Study of U-S Teens Shows Fewer Youth Confident in War on Terrorism and War in Iraq Than in Past Years

Approaching the fifth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, a study of U-S teens (ages thirteen to eighteen) shows youth believe that America will not succeed in the war on terror or in the war in Iraq. Only thirty-eight percent of teens trust the government in Washington to do what is right in the war on terrorism -- half the percentage that agreed with that statement following the 2001 tragedy (seventy-six percent). Fewer youth currently feel assured that the government can prevent future attacks, and they are not optimistic that the war in Iraq will end any time in the near future.

Fewer Teens Using Illicit Drugs, New Survey Shows

Overall illicit drug use among teens is down for the third year in a row, according to the largest and most comprehensive study of drug use in the United States released Thursday. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's 2005 National Survey on Drug Use and Health showed a significant decline in illicit drug use among twelve to seventeen year olds since 2002, particularly marijuana use.

Since 2002, current illicit drug use among twelve to seventeen year olds is down from eleven-point-six percent to nine-point-nine percent (2005). That marks a cumulative drop of fifteen percent, or three-hundred-sixty-seven- thousand fewer youth (twelve to seventeen) using any illicit drug in the past month in 2005 compared to 2002. In that same time period, current marijuana use also decreased from eight-point-two percent (2002) to six-point-eight percent (2005), a drop of seventeen percent overall.
