Boston University Exceeds Enrollment Goals With More Than 400 Online Music Education Graduate Students

BOSTON, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- In just one year, Boston University's (BU) two distance learning graduate music programs have experienced tremendous growth. The two programs, the Doctor of Musical Arts in Music Education and the Master of Music in Music Education (www.musiceducation.bu.edu), which began online classes in the fall of 2005, are expecting more than 400 students to be enrolled in the programs in the fall 2006 term beginning in September.

"The overwhelming demand for our graduate distance learning music education degrees has far outpaced our expectations," said Dr. William McManus Chairman of the Music Education Department at Boston University. "The response by music educators to earn advanced degrees at BU speaks to the quality of the program, and the demand for the degree in the market."

Students in BU's online music education programs enjoy a flexible and convenient learning experience that allows them to continue with their careers and personal obligations while working toward their degree. The Master of Music in Music Education program is completely online with no campus visits, while the Doctorate in Music Education requires students to visit the campus for a one-week residency to begin the writing of the doctoral dissertation.

Both programs started modestly with an entering class of 36 students in the doctorate program and 31 students in the master's program last fall. But within two semesters the programs had grown to over 100 students. With the new student applicants ready to begin at BU this fall, the numbers look to be more than 200 students in each of the two programs.

To achieve such a high level of growth in a short time, Boston University enlisted the help of Compass Knowledge Group, Inc. Compass provides end-to-end distance learning services to BU's online programs allowing the university to concentrate on delivering the degree courses.

Compass markets the online music degrees for BU and recruits students to participate in the programs. Compass also partners with the BU Distance Education Department to provide ongoing proactive retention support, supplying students with assistance to successfully complete the program in a timely manner.

The successful relationship between Compass and BU has led to a student retention rate of more than 90 percent and steady increases in student enrollment every term.
