Complete, corrected release follows:
The SÓ Centre for Music, Art & Movement offers a multi-sensory
educational experience to children (4yrs +) and adults of all abilities
starting in September 2006.
The SÓ approach recognises the importance of achieving a natural and
spontaneous synthesis of body and mind during the creative artistic process.
Our students master the synchronisation of technical, musical and creative
elements through participation in a range of activities exploring the shared
artistic vocabulary of structure, shape, colour, line, movement and texture.
Experienced teachers provide tuition in all musical instruments and
singing, and the established teaching methods of Dalcroze Eurythmics and
Kodály Musicianship are made available to everyone. Dalcroze Eurythmics
constitutes a fun yet structured approach to learning and expressing rhythm,
style, form, dynamics and coordination through whole-body movement,
interaction, and improvisation. It is beneficial to all, particularly music
students, dancers and actors. Kodály Musicianship classes develop an
awareness and sensitivity to the sounds that students make in singing, and
establish a strong sense of pitch and harmony in a relaxed and focused
atmosphere. Classes foster the creative musical impulse, encourage
self-expression and improvisation while teaching the rudiments and theory of
music. This type of study is rooted in the Kodály approach to musicianship
training and helps students get the most, and the best, out of their musical
instruments.
It is the collaboration of classes offered, together with Alexander
Technique, chamber music coaching, chamber choir as well as Art Workshops
exploring the relationship between movement, creativity and expression that
make the SÓ approach unique. Director Mr Leslie Hollingworth says, "Our aim
is to broaden and enrich the learning experience of students, and help them
realise their natural expressive potential, regardless of perceived ability.
We strive for the very highest standards in teaching, providing support and
professional development opportunities to staff, particularly in the area of
special needs learning. All students can expect to enjoy our inclusive and
encouraging style."
This new and refreshing approach to music education is inspired by the
life and work of the world-renowned Hungarian pianist, teacher, painter and
writer Orsolya Szabó. Orsolya Szabó is currently a Professor of Piano at the
Kodály Institute (Liszt Academy), and has developed her own unique method of
movement applied to the processes of interpretation, creation and
performance. Among her many achievements is her work as a teacher for Yehudi
Menuhin's MUS-E Project, and as Artistic Director of SÓ, Prof. Szabó has a
special role working with teachers and students sharing her creative
expertise through master classes and teacher training.
"I am delighted that my holistic approach to teaching musicians and
artists is to be shared and developed in this way. This is an important
opportunity to help as many students as possible experience the freedom of
artistic expression, and benefit from a range of artistic experiences as well
as from excellence in teaching standards" says Prof Szabó.
Our teaching location is: South Hampstead High School, 3 Maresfield
Gardens, NW3 5SS
