Carr's spoof has generated 1.532 million downloads, 1/4 of these in the 48 hours prior to the 2006 Oscar Broadcast, according to Steven and Aime McCrory, Carr's publicists. The Jon Stewart spoof, starring Carr who is also the director/star of "REVO LOU TION" coming to theatres this April 28, 2006, is available at http://www.revoloutionmovie.com/
The short begins with Bret Carr as 'Jon Stewart' rehearsing for the Oscars in material that has clearly been censored. The short then shows 'Stewart's' character worrying about upstaging Steven Spielberg and George Clooney, and upsetting the network with his socially responsible, politically charged Oscar short, "THE GAY AFTER TOMORROW."
'Stewart' explains that in order to not risk the censorship of "ABC thinking I have a political opinion," that he acts in the short under the psuedonym, "Lou Benedetti." 'Stewart' infiltrates the Taliban camp as Carr's underdog protagonist "Lou Benedetti," rescuing America by dismantling Bin Laden's inner child and his "Gay After Tomorrow Bomb."
The short was released on Wednesday to Carr's fans from his "Passion of the Heist" spoof, which landed him the status of filmmaker of the month on the cover of the April 2004 Hollywood Reporter and articles in ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY and thousands of Blogs and online sites. Carr generated 12 million downloads for "Passion" on a production budget of $20 dollars. Carr's last short "Fahrenheit 6911" generated 5.74 million hits and secured his position as the world's most downloaded short filmmaker.
Lou Benedetti, Bret Carr's alter ego, the central character of the feature film "REVO LOU TION" is also the character we see being played by 'Jon Stewart'. Carr stars in and directs "REVO LOU TION," being released April 28th in Los Angeles and New York. "REVO LOU TION" is co-written with Quinn Redeker ("The Deer Hunter") and Mary Helen Shashy. REVO LOU TION follows the Oscar underdog theme with a story about a violent, homophobic, stuttering boxer who transforms into a gay-friendly powerful communicator. The film boasts an incendiary cameo by ROCKY's Burt Young and a music theme from composer Bill Conti.
Carr, who worked as a street artist during the seven year making of his epic indie, was discovered via his $20 "Passion of the Heist" spoof. He is now relying on these same fans to drive theatrical traffic to his release at the Laemlle theatres in LA and the Village East theatre in NY.
Carr's role in REVO LOU TION is what Oscar Winner Jane Fonda calls an, "Extraordinary" performance.
Boosted by the confidence of early reviews -- "Life-changing"(1), "An unforgettable, 'so real it's scary,' performance"(2), "An Inspirational Masterpiece"(3) -- "REVO LOU TION" opens April 28th 2006 in NY/LA and is creating a new distribution paradigm by booking theatres based on email signups from his short films.
Carr's producer Stephen Polk says, "Our marketing tactics are being rewarded because LOU is a magical character and Bret's vision and versatility is endlessly engaging. As well, the impact of Bret's REVO LOU TION on audiences breaches the boundaries of what has been achieved in a motion picture before, and our web presence displays the results to our millions of enrolled fans."
Carr's other producer Noah Berlow says, "Our internet fan base represents the same type of niche fan-power which is overshadowing Hollywood Blockbusters this award season. This is the reason both myself and Antonio Sarmiento, former production heads at Spielberg's SHOAH foundation, joined Carr to work voluntarily on what we feel is the most powerful film we have have ever experienced. REVO LOU TION has found it's own market sector which will explode into popular consciousness because of it's commitment to service."
