MHz NETWORKS' Hablemos de Salud Teams Up with the American Red Cross on Health & Safety Topics for Hispanics
WASHINGTON, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Hablemos de Salud, the nation's longest-running, Spanish-language medical television program, joins forces with the American Red Cross in presenting health and safety education for Latinos. The first segment of this live call-in program is devoted to the topic of home fires and features Red Cross fire prevention experts, to increase the Hispanic public's awareness of this most common of disasters. House fires kill more people in the United States each year than all annual natural disasters combined. This episode will examine how to develop an emergency evacuation plan and take steps toward fire prevention and safety. It will air on Saturday, March 11 at 2:00 PM on MHz NETWORKS. Hablemos de Salud can also be seen on the national program stream, MHz WORLDVIEW.
In April Hablemos de Salud will focus on CPR, including a demonstration by an American Red Cross instructor with audience participation. This live, one- hour episode will air on Saturday, April 1 at 2:00 PM. Also scheduled for April is the topic of Blood Services. Few people realize that only 5 percent of the eligible population actually donates blood even though 60 percent are able and qualified to donate. This segment will air on-location on Saturday, April 29 at 2:00 PM at a local Red Cross Blood Services Region, and will feature Hablemos de Salud host Dr. Elmer Huerta.
Other topics slated for this season of Hablemos de Salud include workplace safety, disaster preparedness and volunteerism. Members of the public who are interested in becoming part of a live-studio audience should call 703.770.7121, or visit www.mhznetworks.org for more details and schedule listings. For those interested in calling in with a medical question during the show, please call 1-877-888-6491.
Launching its tenth season in November 2005, Hablemos de Salud focuses on changing lifestyles for the better, and helping Latinos understand how the healthcare system functions and how it can help to better their lives and those of their families. The program is hosted by nationally-renowned cancer specialist and radio personality Dr. Elmer Huerta, the founder of Prevencion, Inc., a not-for-profit organization committed to improving quality of life for all Latinos.

About the American Red Cross
The American Red Cross is where people mobilize to help their neighbors- across the street, across the country, and across the world-in emergencies. Each year, in communities large and small, victims of some 70,000 disasters turn to neighbors familiar and new--the nearly one million volunteers and 35,000 employees of the Red Cross. Through almost 900 locally supported chapters, more than 15 million people gain the skills they need to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their homes, communities and world. Some four million people give blood-the gift of life-through the Red Cross, making it the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. And the Red Cross helps thousands of U.S. service members separated from their families by military duty stay connected. As part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, a global network of 181 national societies, the Red Cross helps restore hope and dignity to the world's most vulnerable people. An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.
