CBS News Taps Knowledge Networks to Track Viewer Reactions to State of the Union Speech

Scientifically Based Nationwide Panel Has Measured Response to Presidential Speeches, Debates for National News Network Since 2000

MENLO PARK, Calif., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- CBS News turned to Knowledge Networks to measure viewer reactions to President Bush's State of the Union speech last night, featuring data from the KN nationwide online panel in its post-speech analysis.

"We are committed to giving CBS News viewers the most accurate assessment of the public's reactions to major news events," said Kathleen Frankovic, Director of Surveys at CBS News. "Knowledge Networks has helped us do that since 2000, and we are very pleased to be working with them once again."

More than 700 members of the Knowledge Networks Panel -- the only online panel based on a representative sample of the U.S. population -- shared their opinions on a variety of key issues both before and after the speech, to assess what effect the address might have had.

The survey found that:

-- 77% of respondents approve of the proposals President Bush made in his
speech, while 23% disapprove
-- 59% said the President's proposals would make their lives better, while
33% said they would have no effect, and 9% felt they would make life
worse
-- 32% feel that the President will be able to accomplish his goals, while
68% say he will not be able to
