Charles Towne Landing, Discover Carolina Get Boost From Cable TV Donation
CHARLESTON, S.C., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The renovation project under way at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site has gotten a boost from the S.C. Cable Television Association (SCCTA).
The organization has donated $100,000 to the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism (SCPRT) to be used by the Discover Carolina education program of the State Park Service.
Half of the contribution will be used to outfit the classroom in Charles Towne Landing's new visitor center, while the rest will be used for Discover Carolina programs at 18 other state parks and the State House.
Discover Carolina uses state-approved curriculum as guideposts and the state parks and State House as the setting for hands-on field study of classroom lessons in subjects including biology, math and history.
"Our association is proud to continue our tradition of helping out the schools in the communities we serve and of furthering education statewide," said Kathy Brabson, chairman of the board for SCCTA and vice president and general manager of Time Warner Cable's operations in Summerville, Myrtle Beach and Florence.
Chad Prosser, director of SCPRT, noted that the cable television association also recently donated $25,000 for the production of a tour brochure for the State House, and has a long history of supporting education in South Carolina.
"From providing cable channels to local school districts to funding college scholarships for deserving students, the SCCTA has been a valuable partner for education in South Carolina," Prosser said. "We're pleased to be part of that effort, especially as Charles Towne Landing nears its re-birth as a destination for learners of all ages to more fully appreciate the founding of this great city and our great state."
Charles Towne Landing, site of the 1670 founding of the first successful English colony in the Carolinas, is undergoing extensive renovation. The new visitors center is expected to be completed in August 2006 and will include a classroom designed to accommodate Discover Carolina and other educational activities.
The Discover Carolina program served more than 25,000 school children last year, engaging them in such hands-on learning as studying crops and playing games at Charles Towne Landing that their counterparts would have been enjoying on that same site more than 300 years ago.
