Amicus Condemns Redundancy Announcement at Western Mail and Echo
LONDON, December 2/PRNewswire/ -- Amicus said today that it is astounded that the Western Mail and Echo,
the most profitable Region in the Trinity Mirror Group, has announced 44
redundancies across its operations in South Wales.
Staff from Cardiff to Carmarthen will be affected by the wide-ranging
proposals which the union believes are not sustainable.
Amicus is now working closely with the company to try to find alternative
solutions to the proposals, which have been brought about by deteriorating
trading conditions and the need for cost-savings.
Andrea Jones, Amicus Regional Officer, said:
"The Western Mail and Echo have begun to consult with the unions, however
if the company had been willing to talk to us sooner, I believe that we could
have delivered alternative cost-saving initiatives resulting in real
long-term benefits for the company.
"Our main concern now is for our members whose jobs are at risk - we are
working closely with Western Mail and Echo Ltd to find solutions that will
protect our members' interests and where possible preserve their future with
the company."
The media industry in Wales has been hit hard by cuts recently - both BBC
and ITV have suffered cutbacks and redundancies and this continually
threatens the regional identity of the Welsh media.
