"This is an exciting time for Asian Americans in this country. Many are involved in such groundbreaking roles and achieving extraordinary excellence in their individual fields. As the television home for Asian America, I couldn't be more excited about bringing an event of this magnitude to television," said Peilin Chou, Senior Vice President of Programming and Production, AZN Television, and Executive Producer of "The 2006 Asian Excellence Awards." "This celebration will shine a spotlight on an otherwise often overlooked group -- the best and brightest of Asian America."
For the past four years, Welly Yang and his New York-based theater company Second Generation have produced an earlier incarnation of the award show in New York City under the name the "Concert of Excellence" with Remy Martin as the corporate sponsor. The annual event has sold-out Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and has gained tremendous recognition throughout the Asian American community.
"The 2006 Asian Excellence Awards is the next evolution of this event, which will continue to celebrate and uplift the heroes of the Asian American community but on a much larger scale than ever before by bringing it to a national audience through AZN Television," said Yang. "I'm thrilled that Remy Martin has continued their commitment to this celebration since the pursuit of excellence resonates so powerfully with both Remy and the Asian American community."
Past honorees, hosts and presenters have included Kelly Hu, B.D. Wong, Jason Scott Lee, Tia Carrere, Bai Ling, Lou Diamond Phillips, Pat Morita, Zhang Yimou, David Henry Hwang, Shekhar Kapur, Tan Dun, Mira Nair, John Cho, Lisa Ling, Tony Danza, Wu Tang Clan and Ralph Macchio.
This year, AZN Television is taking on the production, with Remy Martin maintaining a lead sponsorship role. Welly Yang, Syd Vinnedge and Peilin Chou are Executive Producers of the show. Veteran awards show producer Greg Sills serves as the Supervising Producer.
"We are thrilled to be a part of this celebration of the Asian American community for a 5th year in a row," said Steve Hissam, Category Director for Remy Martin.
