Americans' Confidence in Military News Coverage Takes Steep Drop

Americans are more interested in military and national security issues, but feel the media and the military are doing an insufficient job in keeping them as informed on those topics as they were six years ago. That's according to a new McCormick Tribune Foundation/Gallup Poll.

Fifty-four percent of Americans say they feel the military keeps them well informed, down from 77 percent of those surveyed in 1999. The news media also saw a decline, with 61 percent of Americans feeling the media keeps them well informed on military and national security issues, compared to 79 percent in the earlier survey.

Frat Death Sparks Anti-Booze Drive

Student activists at more than 50 colleges are campaigning to warn about the dangers of binge drinking, which run rampant at many schools. The effort is spearheaded by the Gordie Foundation, named in memory of Lynn "Gordie" Bailey, who died of alcohol poisoning during a University of Colorado fraternity initiation. Gordie Awareness Week starts on September 17th, the anniversary of the 18-year-old freshman's death. Gordie's stepfather, Michael Lanahan, says the week aims to make kids aware that the amount of liquor that makes someone pass out is dangerously close to a level that can kill them. The program also supplies anti-alcohol teaching materials for grammar and middle schools.

Approval Ratings for President and Congressional Leaders Continue to Drop, According to Latest Harris Poll

The Harris Poll says President Bush's job approval ratings are at their lowest point of his presidency. Only 40 percent of U-S adults have a favorable opinion of his job performance, while 58 percent have a negative opinion. This is a decline from just two months ago in June when the president's ratings were 45 percent positive and 55 percent negative. Much of this decline can be tied to the public's opinion on important issues. The war has climbed to the top of the most important issues list and the economy is now the second most important issue.

Month Long Celebration: Ray Charles Post Office Building, Near Site of Historic Studios, Named in Honor of Music Legend

Kicking off a month long celebration, the legendary Ray Charles, who would have been 75 years old on September 23, has had a post office named in his honor. It's at 49-60 West Washington Blvd., near the site of his original and historic Los Angeles studios.

President Bush officially signed the Ray Charles post office bill into law last July.
