NBC 5 Wins Two National Awards From Muscular Dystrophy Association

DALLAS and FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- NBC 5 is honored with two national awards from the Muscular Dystrophy Association's 26th Annual Broadcast Journalism Awards. The awards recognize television programming that increases public understanding of the neuromuscular diseases targeted by MDA and awareness of the Association's programs.

NBC 5 received a Gold Award in the News (Telethon and non-Telethon) category for "Mike Snyder MDA Series," produced by Mike Snyder and Steve Lemonds. These reports focused on North Texas children affected by neuromuscular diseases. The station also won a Gold Award for its "Aisles of Smiles" promotion, produced by James A. Martinez, in the MDA Telethon Special Event Promotion category. This promotion told viewers how to take part and help muscular dystrophy by purchasing particular products at participating grocery stores.

The 2005 MDA Broadcast Journalism Award Committee selected 38 winners from over 350 entries in this year's nationwide competition.

NBC 5 has been part of the MDA's national "Love Network" for over 32 years broadcasting the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon and featuring MDA related programming throughout the year. Last year's telethon yielded over $2.57 million from North Texas and $59.4 million nationally in donations and pledges to fund programs of research, medical and community services and public health education.

MDA combats neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services, and far-reaching professional and public health education.

This year, the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon will be seen on NBC 5 September 5th, beginning at 5am.
