Opera North Presents `Black, Brown & Beige' In Honor of Black History Month
PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Opera North (formerly Opera Ebony/Philadelphia) will present "Black, Brown & Beige" in honor of Black History Month on Saturday, February 5, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Center for Urban Life, 22nd and Spruce Streets, Philadelphia.
The afternoon program will feature acclaimed jazz and classical violinist, Diane Monroe, who has performed with Yo-Yo Ma and Max Roach; outstanding lyric soprano, Lisa Edwards-Burrs, guest soloist with the Richmond, Roanoke and Petersburg Symphonies and avid performer of works of African-American composers; and the exquisite coloratura soprano, Iris Fairfax, Academy of Vocal Arts alumna and first-prize winner of New York Vocal Artists Millennium and Leontyne Price competitions. Also featured in the program will be Opera North's Artist-In-Concert performers: pianist, Russell Wilson; soprano, Denise Ryks; baritone, Cailin Manson; soprano, Yetta Hansell; and bass-baritone, Cameron Chandler.
Founded in 1974, the mission of Opera North is to broaden, deepen, and inspire African-American cultural participation in opera through outreach programs that educate audiences about opera and by creating performance opportunities for African-American artists. Its productions are supported, in part, by the William Penn Foundation, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Philadelphia Cultural Fund and the associated opera guilds of Opera North.
