National Foundation for Jewish Culture Commissions Paul Taylor Dance Company in honor of the 350th Anniversary of Jewish Life in America

Washington Performance at the Kennedy Center, Dec 16-18

NEW YORK, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Commissioned by the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, The Paul Taylor Dance Company has created a new dance, Klezmerbluegrass, featuring music by Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys, which will be performed in Washington, DC at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on December 16-18, 2004. The Washington performances have been co-commissioned by the Kennedy Center with support from the Howard and Geraldine Polinger Family Foundation.

As Paul Taylor has said, "the Jewish experience in America reflects the best values and traditions of our country - religious freedom, cultural pluralism, individual initiative, and intellectual discourse." The opportunity of the dance company creating a uniquely American-Jewish cultural dance piece attracted the support of the Polinger family according to Lorre Polinger, president of the Foundation. Coincidentally, the Paul Taylor Dance Company will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary season at the same time and plans to perform in all 50 states. It is estimated that over 50,000 people will see Klezmerbluegrass across the width the country during the premier season alone.

In this, the 350th year of Jewish life in America, the National Foundation for Jewish Culture is highlighting the interplay of American and Jewish history, culture, and values. It's hard to imagine American culture without the influence of American Jews, whether talking about film, literature, music, theatre, dance, visual arts, or scholarship. And it's equally hard to imagine a Jewish culture in America that is not shaped and influenced by its American context.

The National Foundation for Jewish Culture (NFJC) is the leading advocate for Jewish cultural creativity and preservation in America. Since 1960, it has nurtured new generations of writers, filmmakers, artists, composers, choreographers and scholars. The NFJC's national and international conferences, partnerships with local communities and institutions, and sponsorships of annual grants and awards in the arts and humanities bring the best of Jewish culture to the Jewish community and the American public.
