NEW YORK, July 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Singer Amadis, known as the Romantic of Salsa Music, will honor Colombia for its Independence Day from majestic New York City. The Puerto Rican singer will be singing live at the event organized by councilwoman Julissa Ferreras, in collaboration with the Colombian Consulate in New York City and the support of Afro Colombia New York, on July 11, 2013 at the Park Theatre in Corona Flushing, Queens. The event includes a showcase of Colombian culture, awards and recognitions of Colombia's greats.
With his romantic voice and infectious rhythm, Amadis will present his most recent hit song, Deseo Veneno (I Desire Poison) from his latest album honoring not only Colombia but also the Cauca Valey. "It is with much love and pride of salsa music that I gift my voice to this celebration and my brothers of Colombian salsa," said Amadis. "We never forget that Cali is the World capital of Salsa where many singers and musicians have made to vibrate a stage."
Amadis will be accompanied by a dance group from Cali to match his romantic style adding nuance and vibrance to the celebration that aims for everyone to dance in their chairs.
How did Cali become a landmark to Salsa Music? This is the story of a culture that quickly learned to ignore barriers. In 1957, the Feria de Cali (Festival of Cali) became a really popular dancing spot for the latest moves like the Boogie Woogie, Foxtrot and Rock 'n' Roll. However, most popular neighborhoods listened and danced to the rumba rhythms coming from Cuba, Puerto Rico and later New York. Cali later went on to host La Pachanga where all of the best of Cali's dancers came together to celebrate salsa. La Pachanga entered Cali with great force through La Charangas orquestras creating a musical bridge between Cuba, Puerto Rico, New York and Colombia.
In 1968, musicians Ricardo Ray and Bobby Cruz brought their rhythm with Descargas (Downloads) where they performed live putting Cali on the map as a salsa destination. Later in the 1970's, salsa music artists Hector Lavoe (Singer of all Salsa Singers) and El Gran Combo of Puerto Rico of La Fania All Stars arrived to Cali to perform paving the way for other singers and orchestras such as Celia Cruz, (The Queen of Salsa), Cheo Feliciano, La Dimension Latina, La Sonora Poncena, Los Hermanos Lebron, Oscar D'Leon, Ruben Blades, Willie Colon, among others. These important artists further enriched the culture of Salsa music in Cali.
In the 1980's, Cali was nicknamed the 'World Capital of Salsa' since the people of Cali learned to perfection the alphabet of Cuban music, the songs and lyrics of salsa artists from Puerto Rico, New York and Colombia. Nowhere else in the world was salsa danced as much as in Cali.
Today, Amadis pays homage to the history and tradition of Salsa music honoring Colombia in the Big Apple.
