Southern California University of Health Sciences Hosts On-Campus Film Premiere For Pain in America: The Silver Tsunami

Insightful New Documentary By Academy Award Winning Filmmaker Don Barrett Examines The Role Of Chiropractic Care In Integrated U.S. Healthcare

WHITTIER, Calif., July 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU), the nation's leading post-graduate college for chiropractic, acupuncture and oriental medicine, has announced a very special on-campus event to premiere Academy Award winning filmmaker Don Barrett's Pain in America: The Silver Tsunami on Thursday, July 25(th) at 6:00pm in Legacy Hall. Barrett's new film documents a unique perspective on the ailing U.S. healthcare system and the role chiropractic care can play in providing effective integrated healthcare solutions.

Don Barrett will make an in-person appearance at the special premiere event to introduce the film and will participate in an audience Q&A immediately following the screening. This event is FREE to attend!

Please RSVP to LisaZuidema@scuhs.com or call 562-902-3324.Southern California University is located at 16200 E. Amber Valley Drive, Whittier, CA 90604.

Pain in America: The Silver Tsunami delivers an insightful look at the scope of chiropractic care in the U.S., how it is used, and its perceptions, and often misconceptions, by the public. Chiropractic care is perhaps the most cost effective treatment form for back and neck pain, and headaches. The film provides a comprehensive history of chiropractic's evolution and widespread use, especially in sports and by the Veterans Administration, and how it has become widely accepted across the nation's health care system. It also looks at common misconceptions and how the practice is portrayed and often maligned by the media. The film further examines how the new Affordable Care Act affects the chiropractic profession and attempts by practitioners and educators to better inform vast numbers of Americans that do not presently enjoy the benefits of chiropractic care. Finally, Pain in America: The Silver Tsunami looks at how chiropractic care fits into the larger integrated health care system and how it can save trillions of dollars in the care of the Baby Boom generation and generations to follow.

"I want as many people as possible, suffering from chronic pain, to watch this film and give chiropractic a try," says Don Barrett. "What do they have to lose except the misery the pain brings to their daily lives? Chiropractors currently treat about 8% of the population. That translates to 25 million people. If as a result of this documentary, that number moves up just four percentage points, it would mean an additional 12 1/2 million patients getting the treatment they need. That's the greatest reward for which I could ever hope."

The Southern California University of Health Sciences was founded in 1911 as one of the first institutions in the United States with a dedicated focus on chiropractic, acupuncture and health sciences. The school has become a premier university preparing the next generation of health practitioners in these disciplines. Acupuncture and chiropractic are among the mostly widely integrated forms of alternative medicine and embraced by millions of patients across North America. SCU emphasizes business leadership, entrepreneurial skills, and clinical expertise founded on principles of interactive hands-on learning with significant laboratory exposure that includes on-site clinical training in the SCU Community Health Center.

"SCU is honored to be one of only four institutions across the U.S. that were selected personally by Don Barrett to premiere his informative documentary," says Southern California University of Health Sciences President Dr. John Scaringe. "SCU offers one of the country's most preeminent curriculums for chiropractic care and we're very excited to screen this film to our chiropractic student body and the general public. We hope it will enlighten them on the current state of chiropractic care in the U.S., the need for every practitioner to help extol its proven benefits to the public, and the vital role chiropractic care plays in integrated healthcare for the 21(st) century."

Writer, Producer, Director Don Barrett was born into a motion picture family. His uncle was an Academy Award winning composer; his grandfather ran the music department at a major Hollywood studio. Barrett began his documentary filmmaking career with turns in "Powers of Ten", "Closed Mondays" and "Scared Straight", which won him an Oscar, an Emmy and the coveted George Foster Peabody Award. He has gone on to create numerous award-winning films and documentaries including, "Patrick Stewart narrates The Planets" (NASA Hubble Award), "Nine Worlds" (Best in Festival - Berlin), and "The Voyager Odyssey" (cited as the 6(th) Best Documentary Ever Made in "The Greatest Movies Ever Made" - Editors of Entertainment Weekly - Time Life). His videos have sold more than four million copies. Barrett considers "Pain in America" one of his most important films.

"I've made a film which will acquaint millions with the opportunities for pain relief afforded by chiropractic care," Barrett concludes. "That actually means more to me, at this point in my life, than all the awards on the planet."
