Excellence in Broadcast Journalism Honors Given to Two Los Angeles Journalists

KCET's Val Zavala and NBC4's Joel Grover Receive Bill Stout Memorial Award for Substantive Coverage of Public Affairs

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Val Zavala, Vice President of News and Public Affairs at KCET, the nation's largest independent public television station, and anchor of KCET's nightly newsmagazine, SoCal Connected, and Joel Grover, investigative reporter for NBC4 Southern California since April 2003, have been named as recipients of the Bill Stout Memorial Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism. The awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, November 15 in the Mark Taper Auditorium at the Riordan Central Library, 630 West Fifth Street, Los Angeles, beginning at 7:30 PM.

These two award-winning journalists are being honored for pursuing their careers in the tradition of Stout, a revered Los Angeles-based local and national broadcast journalist who was a frequent stand-in for legendary CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite. Stout was outspoken about the deteriorating quality of local broadcast news during his decades-long career. Grover and Zavala have consistently examined critical public affairs topics, allowing their viewers insights into issues that often receive insufficient media exploration.
