During her journey, Ricks meets Cynthia Dodson, an uninsured Stage 4 cancer patient from Harlem. The Education of Dee Dee Ricks follows Ricks and Dodson--each from distinctly different backgrounds--as they face their arduous journey together and rely on each other for support. Rick's unlikely bond with Dodson flourishes through the film, and she watches her friend suffer from lack of resources. As a result of this emotional and frustrating battle, Ricks made it her priority to raise funds to aid cancer patients who are financially disadvantaged, helping raise millions of dollars to help uninsured women get the treatment they desperately need.

Along with film producer Lisa Cohen and Harold P. Freeman, MD, President and Founder of the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute and Founder of the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention, Ricks speaks openly with Peltz on the show about the many challenges she faced during and after her battle with cancer, from losing her hair to the sticker shock of the medical bills, and the overriding fear of not seeing her own children grow up.
