Aid For AIDS in California Announces Jeffrey Drew as New Director for Legendary, Annual Fundraiser "Best In Drag Show©"

Aid For AIDS in California Announces Jeffrey Drew as New Director for Legendary, Annual Fundraiser "Best In Drag Show©"

LOS ANGELES, July 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "Best In Drag Show©," the outrageous and long-running annual fundraiser for Aid For AIDS, is under new direction and will be retooled to bring back the "heart" of the show for October 9, 2011 at The Orpheum Theatre.

Jeffrey Drew, a dancer/actor with more than 25 musicals to his credit and the long-time star of the AIDS fundraiser, "Best In Drag Show©," was selected as director/choreographer by executive producer Aid For AIDS to helm the 2011 production. This change in leadership for the beauty pageant spoof is generating a big buzz in Los Angeles and renewing strong interest from the talented community of volunteers making up the designers, cast and crew. Many former key participants have jumped at the chance to work with Drew.

The impact of the show is remarkable. Over the last several years, it has raised $275,000 to $350,000 for AIDS assistance during one hilarious evening. The collective total is in the millions. With underwriting, sponsorship and volunteers, the funds raised go directly to Aid For AIDS. The spoof is in its 22nd year and originally ran for 11 years as "Battle for the Tiara."

Drew says, "It's about putting on a great show and serving the community. We are honoring founder Alexis Pitman's concept of having a lot of fun and seeing how much money we can make for Aid For AIDS while spending as little as possible."

"Best In Drag Show©" is one of the most fun fundraisers in Los Angeles. The roster of celebrity judges brings stars from hit TV shows and films. Many judges seek to return every year. Kathy Griffin, who has regularly judged and frequently opened the fundraiser, said on the CBS' "The Insider," "It's the drag show to beat all drag shows...the greatest show in town."

In the spirit of the campy, beauty pageant, producers announced:

Jeffrey Drew, as long-time "Best In Drag Show©" star Lotta Slots, announced from the stage last year that it was his last one after performing his signature back-flip ...however, we say, "She lied. She's back!"

Participation by cast and crew is a labor of love. They volunteer time, talent and resources for six months to create sets, costumes, script, lighting, and characters. Some contestants debuted at Christopher Street West's (CSW) Los Angeles Pride Parade on the Aid For AIDS float.

Tickets should be available to the public on September 1, 2011 at $35 to $500. For ticket announcements, watch www.aidforaids.net. To join the mailing list: 323-344-4880 and 323-344-4882; rcosio@alliancehh.org and jbondurant@alliancehh.org.
