Travel Channel to Premiere "Dance the World" One-Hour Special Featuring Award-Winning Dancer Jaycee Gossett Mastering The Samba at Carnival in Salvador, Brazil
CHEVY CHASE, Md., July 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- On Monday, July 11 at 10:00 p.m., ET/PT, Travel Channel will premiere the original one-hour special Dance the World, featuring award-winning dancer Jaycee Gossett as she discovers the roots of the Samba in Salvador, Brazil. Determined to absorb the city's authenticity, New Jersey-born Gossett investigates the challenge of learning the Bahian-style Samba. Highlights from the premiere event include:
-- Observing her dance instructors, Slleyk and Mariana, Gossett discovers
that this Samba looks nothing like the structured westernized version
she learned on the ballroom floor - it is loose and free, steeped in
African influence, and involves hip movements that she's never seen
before.
-- Gossett journeys to a local club to learn Brazil's latest social dance
craze -- Forro -- and spends the evening line dancing and spinning in
the arms of strangers to immerse herself in the Brazilian experience.
-- Gossett meets with Vanessa, a Capoeira instructor, on a local beach to
learn about this cross between martial arts and dance. Gossett learns
that Capoeira shares a close connection with the Samba -- both were
developed and practiced by slaves looking to escape oppression.
-- Gossett has trouble mastering the feeling and attitude behind the Samba
so her instructors take her to their hometown to dance the streets with
the locals. She is able to better understand the dance and is invited
to perform in front of three million people at one of the biggest
parties on earth - Carnival.
