Connecticut School Generates Energy and Interest

Connecticut School Generates Energy and Interest

Solar Powered Bridgeport School captures interest of MXenergyTV

STAMFORD, Conn., June 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- You can practically feel the energy when you walk through the halls of the Discovery Magnet School in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Energy not just from the teachers and students but from the building itself. The school, which officially opened in 2011, is the epitome of "green" design, being awarded a Leadership in Energy Efficiency (LEED) Silver designation.

In Spring 2011, American Solar & Alternative Power equipped the Bridgeport school with a building integrated photovoltaic rooftop solar system designed to capture 85% of the sun's energy making the building highly energy efficient.

The construction of the school and the installation of the solar panels captured the attention of MXenergyTV producers who decided to feature the school in a segment of "Attainable Sustainables," a "green living" educational program carried exclusively on MXTV, an On Demand cable channel on Cablevision iO.

"The development and design of the Discovery Magnet School represents the very best in environmentally friendly construction," says Marjorie Kass, MXenergy Managing Director and Host of MXTV. "Even more important that the design itself, is the educational impact this building will have on every student, teacher, and parent who walk through its doors. It is sharing innovations like this with our viewers that is at the very heart of our mission at MXTV."

The MXTV crew and producers visited the school in April to film the installation of the school's rooftop solar panels and interview key school and community leaders. The segment is now complete and airing on MXTV.

Connecticut has struggled in recent years with the issues of energy cost and energy efficiency. Governor Malloy recently reiterated his commitment to position Connecticut as a leader in the efficiency movement.

Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch sees the Discovery Magnet School as an excellent step in that direction, "I think this is how we are going to reduce our carbon footprint and create jobs...through the kind of economic engine this school represents."

MXenergyTV was created by Stamford based MXenergy, one of the nation's leading independent energy providers in order to educate people about the importance of energy efficiency and other environmental issues. MXTV can be found on Cablevision iO Channel 654 in the Northeast United States. "Solar Schools" which features the Discovery Magnet School is just one of many programs focused on energy efficiency and "green living."
