Dr. Brotman's guests will include Robert I. Grossman, MD, Dean and CEO of NYU Langone Medical Center, and Martin Blaser, MD, Frederick H. King Professor of Internal Medicine, Professor of Microbiology at NYU Langone Medical Center, the recipient of a National Institute of Health Director's Transformative Research Project award for his study on whether biological changes from antibiotic use in children has fueled the epidemic of obesity. The amount of the award is approximately $6.6 million over a five year period. Currently, over 1/3 of U.S. adults are obese and one of six children are overweight. In fact, rates of obesity have increased so rapidly over the past three decades that scientists believe that there must be an environmental cause. Dr. Blaser and colleagues hypothesize that antibiotic use early in life has resulted in the disappearance, or extinction, of key microbiota in the human gastrointestinal tract.
The Dean's List will air live October 1 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm ET on Doctor Radio, SIRIUS channel 114 and XM channel 119. It will replay October 2 at 12:00 pm ET and October 3 at 12:00 pm and 8:00 pm ET.
On this edition of The Dean's List, Dr. Brotman's guests and topics include:
-- Robert Grossman, M.D., Dean and CEO of NYU Langone Medical Center to
discuss the current challenges of hospitals in the economic environment,
and how healthcare changes affect care in hospital settings.
-- Martin Blaser, M.D., Frederick H. King Professor of Internal Medicine
and Professor of Microbiology at the NYU Langone Medical Center to
discuss research investigating the possible link between antibiotic use
and obesity.
-- Lewis Goldfrank, M.D., Herbert W. Adams Professor of Emergency Medicine
and Chair of the Emergency Medicine Department at NYU Hospital to
discuss the role of the Emergency Room and the future of emergency care.
-- Kareem Habibi, Vice President for Medical Center Managed Care, to
discuss how internet and magazine rankings of doctors and hospitals have
changed the way people choose the best doctors and medical centers for
treatment. Finding the right doctor and medical center was once the
result of trusted referrals and long term top care. Today many people
"shop" for medical treatment the same way they would for a car or
refrigerator. But should they? Is that leading them to the best care
they should have?
On The Dean's List, Dr. Brotman offers his unique perspective and insight on the latest news, issues and research in worlds of health care and medicine, bringing listeners inside a wide variety of departments of one of the country's leading medical centers. Dr. Brotman is also a Professor of Psychiatry at the NYU Langone School of Medicine.
Doctor Radio features live, call-in shows hosted by leading NYU Langone Medical Center doctors from a vast array of fields including: child psychology; sexual health; plastic surgery; emergency room medicine; cancer; heart health; women's health; dermatology; pediatrics; men's health; diet and nutrition; sports medicine; psychiatry; and more.
