DETAILS: BOARDWALK EMPIRE is set in Atlantic City in 1920 at the dawn of Prohibition, when the sale of alcohol became illegal throughout the United States. The town's undisputed ruler, Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (played by Steve Buscemi), was a political fixer and backroom dealer who was equal parts politician and gangster--and equally comfortable in either role. His brother Elias (Shea Whigham), a corrupt sheriff, helped Nucky carve out a niche as the man to see for any illegal alcohol. Because of its proximity to the ocean, Atlantic City was a major hub of activity for rumrunners, including Arnold Rothstein, Lucky Luciano and Al Capone - and Nucky did business with them all.
