Envivio Video Encoders Chosen by Axcera to Power ATSC Mobile DTV Solution
4Caster C4(2) Provides Superior Quality Encoding for Innovative End-to-End ATSC-M/H Transmission Solution; Included in Axcera Live Mobile DTV Demonstration at NAB 2010
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Envivio Inc. announced today that Axcera has selected the 4Caster(TM) C4(2) for Mobile Broadcast to be a key component of the complete ATSC Mobile DTV transmission solution to be demonstrated during NAB 2010, April 12-15. The Axcera demonstration utilizes the 4Caster C4(2) to live encode an ATSC programming stream, typical of most U.S. broadcasters, into a high quality ATSC-M/H output stream for broadcast by Axcera transmission systems. The complete solution, including output to an array of mobile devices, will be on display in the Axcera booth (SU2908) and the 4Caster C4(2) for Mobile Broadcast can be seen in detail at the Envivio booth (SU4302).

Mike Rosso, Axcera Sr. VP of Sales said, "Envivio has made itself an important partner by consistently anticipating and being ready with solutions that support the latest standards and market requirements. We want the best quality video to showcase the power and innovation of Axcera's Mobile DTV transmission systems, so naturally the Envivio 4Caster C4(2) was our choice as the first step in the transmission chain."
For the Axcera demonstration, Envivio 4Caster C4(2) will ingest a main service ATSC signal typical of that used by thousands of broadcasters throughout the United States, effectively replicating an actual TV station's operations. 4Caster C4(2) will then encode the signal for ATSC-M/H Mobile DTV distribution in real-time, ensuring the best video quality possible within the tight bandwidth allocated for mobile broadcast.
Arnaud Perrier, Envivio VP for solutions added, "The ability to deliver a consistent, quality service will be a key factor in attracting and retaining subscribers to mobile DTV channels. Axcera is expert at ensuring that a strong, reliable signal reaches consumers and we are very pleased that they have chosen the Envivio 4Caster C4(2) to ensure that the video content they broadcast looks its very best."
Combining the processing power of the latest Intel multi-core server processors with Envivio's newest high-efficiency, high-quality Extreme(TM) video codec, 4Caster C4(2) for Mobile Broadcast provides full support for the world's most important mobile TV broadcast standards including ATSC-M/H for Mobile DTV, CMMB, DVB-H, DVB-SH and ISDB-T. 4Caster C4(2) also extends beyond broadcast to support 3GPP and HTTP streaming formats, distribution to PCs using Microsoft Smooth Streaming and Adobe Flash Dynamic Streaming, as well as HD and SD IPTV and broadcast television. This flexibility enables broadcasters to use a single platform to distribute the same content to different target devices and/or networks.
Delivering four times the channel density of previous generation encoders, 4Caster C4(2) supports ingest of MPEG-2 or H.264 sources from satellite and terrestrial networks, as well as analog, SDI and HD-SDI sources direct from broadcast studios. Integrated statistical rate control (statmux) delivers up to a further 40% bandwidth reduction per channel for mobile broadcast networks. An available DVB-Simulcrypt interface enables comprehensive content protection with third-party conditional access systems. A flexible software architecture readily upgrades to deliver quality enhancements and to support changing requirements.
At NAB 2010, Axcera will transmit a live ATSC Mobile DTV signal, which will be received by a variety of consumer receivers. Visitors to the Axcera booth can experience the transmission solution first hand by viewing program content on a mobile receiver. The end-to-end transmission solution includes Axcera's new ATSC Mobile DTV Pre-Processor/Multiplexer and its Axciter(TM) ATSC exciter-modulator along with mobile content encoding from Envivio, ESG equipment from Expway, and consumer receivers from a variety of suppliers.
