Current TV's Documentary Series 'Vanguard' Receives 69th Annual Peabody Award and 2010 Television Academy Honor

Vanguard's 'OxyContin Express' Episode Continues to Win Industry's Highest Honors

SAN FRANCISCO, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Current TV has received both the 69th Annual Peabody Award and the 2010 Television Academy Honor for the "Vanguard" documentary series episode, "The OxyContin Express."

The Peabody Award is given for excellence in electronic media and the Television Academy Honor recognizes achievements in programming that present issues of concern to our society in a compelling, emotional and insightful way. Along with these latest awards, Current TV's "Vanguard" has received some of the media industry's highest honors for journalism, including two Emmy® nominations, the 2009 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Award and the 2009 Livingston Award.

"While other television journalism outlets are cutting back, Current TV remains committed as ever to telling the stories that no one else is telling," said Joel Hyatt, co-founder and vice chairman of Current TV. "We are thrilled to be a recipient of the 69th Annual Peabody Award and the 2010 Television Academy Honors. My co-founder, Al Gore, and I are extremely proud of the Vanguard team as they continue to push the boundaries of investigative storytelling."

"The OxyContin Express" exposes the pervasive abuse of a prescription medication once considered a miracle cure for chronic pain. Armed with a hidden camera, "Vanguard" correspondent Mariana van Zeller discovers that many of her fellow patients in a pain clinic in Ft. Lauderdale have driven as many as 18 hours and nearly a thousand miles to have a more-than-willing doctor prescribe them drugs to which they have become addicted.

"Vanguard," airing weekly on Wednesdays at 10PM/9PM CT, is an investigative documentary series whose award-winning correspondents put themselves in extraordinary situations to immerse viewers in global issues that have a large social significance. Unlike sound-bite driven reporting, the show's correspondents, Adam Yamaguchi, Kaj Larsen, Christof Putzel and Mariana van Zeller, serve as trusted guides who take viewers on in-depth real life adventures in pursuit of some of the world's most important stories.
